    Abstract: An extruder screw (10) for use in a barrel of an extruder for forwarding thermoplastic polymer from a first end to a second end of the extruder. The extruder comprises a transition section (14) and at least one flight (20) extending substantially along the length of the screw (10). A dam (24) is positioned at the point where the rapid melting of the solids starts to slow down and the rate of solid bed width decrease approaches zero. The dam (24) provides the screw with a high output of extrudate and close control of the residence time of polymer particles as they are transported through the screw (10), resulting in an extrudate which is uniformly melted and which is substantially free of degradation products and/or entrapped air.

    Abstract: The present invention is a polymeric composition which comprises a vinylidene chloride interpolymer blended into a mixture with an extrusion formulation package, said vinylidene chloride interpolymer being present in an amount of from 59.8 and 99.7 weight percent and said formulation package being present in an amount of from 0.3 and 40.2 weight percent. The formulation package comprises from 0.05 to 5 weight percent of an alkali metal salt or alkaline earth metal salt of a weak acid; and the remainder of the formulation package comprises at least two components selected from the group consisting of (a) a polyethylene containing up to a minor amount of a comonomer, said polyethylene being capable of lowering the frictional coefficient of a polymeric composition containing a polyvinylidene chloride interpolymer; (b) a plasticizer; and (c) at least one external lubricant selected from the group consisting of (i) oxidized polyolefins, and (ii) polyolefin waxes or oils.

    Abstract: The present invention is a composition and process for making a vinylidene chloride interpolymer with improved extrudability, wherein the vinylidene chloride interpolymer is blended and a unique combination of additives which comprises an extrusion aid selected from the group consisting of oxidized polyethylene; oxidized polypropylene; or mixtures thereof, in an amount of from about 0.01 to about 0.5 weight percent; a paraffin wax present in an amount of from about 0.005 to about 1 weight percent; ethylene-vinyl acetate is present in an amount of from about 0.5 to about 2 weight percent, and an epoxidized oil or resin present in an amount of from about 0.8 to about 3 weight percent, all percentages being based on the total weight of the mixture. In a preferred embodiment the present invention further comprises blending the above-described mixture with an inorganic base present in an amount of from about 0.01 to about 5 weight percent, based upon the weight percent of the mixture. Exemplary inorganic bases include magnesium hydroxide, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, magnesium oxide, and calcium hydroxy phosphate.
