Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain carbon fiber that has excellent handleability and resin impregnating ability on the formation of composite material by forming acrylic fibers, doubling and entangling them, making them resistant to flame and subjecting the flame-resistant fibers to carbonization treatment. SOLUTION: An acrylic fiber tow of a largely thick denier comprising 4,400-30,000 filaments of 0.5-2 denier fineness is formed and wound up tentatively. Then, a plurality of tows, for example, 2 to 8 tows are combined, then entangled through the hook-dropping technique until the entangling value attains to 5-100/m, in other words, substantially no twist, to form one bundle of filament tow. Then, the tow is heat-treated at 200-300 deg.C in an oxidative atmosphere, for example, in the air, to make the tow resistant to flame, the flame-resistant tow is subjected to the pre-carbonization treatment in an inert atmosphere, for example, in nitrogen or argon atmosphere at 300-600 deg.C, followed by the post-carbonization treatment in addition, at 1,000-1,500 deg.C thereby producing carbon fibers.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a carbon fiber in baking plural small tows obtained by dividing a precausor fiber bundle in width direction, capable of continuously obtain the desired carbon fiber by simply and stably exchanging the precausor fiber bundle. SOLUTION: This method for producing a carbon fiber is provided by traveling plural small tows having >=30,000 denier total fiber thickness continuously, joining each of the small tows with each of the plural small tows having >=30,000 denier total fiber thickness obtained by dividing another precausor fiber bundle in width direction and then baking. In the carbon fiber production device having the above joining process, the joining process has plural guiding rolls 3 and 5, and among them at least one guiding roll is constituted as a movable guiding roll capable of temporarily stopping the traveling of the precausor fiber bundle 2 positioned at the upstream side to the guide roll.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a graphite fiber at high productivity, having a high strength by traveling the fiber to be graphitized and containing a silicon compound within a rectangular cylindrical muffle under a specific condition, while suppressing the growth of silicon carbide. SOLUTION: This graphite fiber is obtained by traveling a fiber 2 to be graphitized and containing a silicon compound such as silicone within a rectangular cylindrical muffle 4 having an inert atmosphere at 2200-3000 deg.C while keeping 5-50mm, preferably 5-25mm distance between the upper wall of the muffle 4 and the fiber to be graphitized. A damage to the fiber or a cutting of the fiber due to attaching to the muffle and the falling off of an accumulated silicon carbide can be suppressed.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To remarkably increase the heat-removing rate, considerably shorten the flame-resisting treatment time without deteriorating the properties of the product and produce a carbon fiber in high productivity by heating a yarn of polyacrylonitrile precursor fibers in opened state at a specific yarn occupancy to effect the flame-resisting treatment and carbonizing the product. CONSTITUTION:A polyacrylonitrile precursor fiber yarn 1 composed of 1,000,000 filaments having single fiber denier of 1d is made to contact with a vibration guide 3 and opened in a state to attain a yarn occupancy of the precursor fiber 1 of 0.1-20% while applying vertical vibration to the yarn in a direction perpendicular to the moving direction of the yarn. Hot air is passed perpendicular to the precursor fiber 1 at a flow rate of 2m/s in this opening process in hot-air circulation flame-resisting treatment apparatuses 4, 4', 4'' and the yarn is subjected to the flame-resisting treatment in three stages at 253 deg.C in the 1st furnace 4, 262 deg.C in the 2nd furnace 4' and 272 deg.C in the 3rd furnace 4''. The flame-resistant fiber is carbonized in nitrogen atmosphere at 1400 deg.C to obtain the objective carbon fiber in high productivity and considerably shortened flame- resisting treatment time at a remarkably increased heat-removing rate.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a carbon fiber without causing yarn breakage due to unevenness of yarn thickness, ignition, etc., by subjecting a polyacrylonitrile-based precursor fiber bundle having thick fineness to flameproof treatment under specific conditions by passing the fiber bundle through a flameproof furnace in zigzags. SOLUTION: The cross section form of a polyacrylonitrile-based precursor fiber bundle having >=30,000 total denier is kept in a rectangle having 10-50 average flatness ratio defined by a ratio of yarn width to yarn thickness. Apparent average fineness per mm width of fiber bundle is preferably kept to 3,000 to 10,000 denier and the fiber bundle is passed through a flameproof furnace in zigzags and subjected to flameproof treatment at 200-300 deg.C. Then, the treated fiber bundle is subjected to carbonization treatment at 500-1,500 deg.C to provide the objective carbon fiber.
