    Abstract: Polyesters containing terminal carboxyl groups comprising the products of reaction of (a) an aliphatic polyester containing terminal hydroxyl groups, prepared from 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid and from an alcoholic constituent comprising (1) from 10 to 100 equivalents % of a cycloaliphatic diol and (2) from 90 to 0 equivalents % of at least one aliphatic polyol containing a straight or branched chain which has from 2 to 12 carbon atoms, with (b) an aliphatic and/or aromatic dicarboxylic acid or the corresponding anhydride, process for their preparation and heat-curable compositions in powder form based on these polyesters and polyepoxy compounds used for the production of varnishes and paints in powder form. These polyesters yield coatings which have an excellent resistance to inclement weather, combined with remarkable mechanical properties, even when the curing is performed at low temperature.

    Abstract: Powdered thermosetting compositions including (a) a specific polyester containing carboxyl end groups and (b) an acrylic copolymer containing glycidyl groups. The polyester (a) containing carboxyl end groups has an acid value of 15 to 70 mg of KOH/g and is necessarily prepared in two stages. In the first stage a polyester containing hydroxyl end groups is prepared from at least one polycarboxylic acid other than 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid and from at least one aliphatic or cycloaliphatic polyol and, in the second stage, the polyester containing hydroxyl end groups thus obtained is esterified with 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid alone. Moreover, the composition of the polyester (a) is highly specific: it contains at least 75 mol% of terephthalic acid, at least 10 mol% of 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid and not more than 14 mol% of at least one other aromatic and/or aliphatic and/or cycloaliphatic polycarboxylic acid, relative to the total of the carboxylic acids forming part of its composition. The powdered thermosetting compositions obtained from polyester (a) and from the acrylic copolymer (b) are particularly useful for the preparation of powdered paints and varnishes. They yield coatings exhibiting high gloss, excellent mechanical properties and, at the same time, good weathering resistance.

Copolymerizable unsaturated self-extinguishing polyesters may be prepared by condensing unsaturated polycarboxylic acids with polyhydroxy halogenated thio compounds of the general formula where R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing at least one hydroxyl group, X is hydrogen or halogen, at least one X being halogen. The halogen atoms are preferably chlorine or bromine. The unsaturated polycarboxylic acid may be maleic, fumaric, itaconic or aconitic acid. The reaction mixture may include saturated polycarboxylic acids such as succinic, adipic, sebacic, phthalic, isophthalic terephthalic and tetrachlorophthalic acids, and the Diels-Alder product of maleic anhydride with hexachlorocyclopentadiene, or ester-forming derivatives thereof, and saturated or unsaturated monocarboxylic acids such as acetic, acrylic, methacrylic and benzoic acids. The thio compound may be partially replaced by other polyhydroxy compounds such as ethylene glycols, propylene glycols, glycerol, trimethylolpropane and pentaerythritol, or by a monohydroxy alcohol such as methanol, ethanol, propanol, 2-ethylhexanol or nonanol. The unsaturated polyesters may be dissolved in vinylic compounds, such as styrene, acrylic esters, methacrylic esters or vinyl esters to produce a resin which may be copolymerized in the presence of free radical catalysts initiated by an organo-metallic compound. Before copolymerization the resin may be mixed with conventional additives (e.g. antimony trioxide). Uses.-Shaped articles such as laminates, coated, painted or varnished articles.
