Abstract: An apparatus and method for cleaning triboelectric negative toner particles from the photoreceptor surface without the need of a preclean corotron. To remove the residual particles, a first cleaning brush, in the direction of motion of the photoreceptor, is negatively biased to remove the positive (+) toner and charge the toner particles negative. Then, the second brush, in the direction of motion of the photoreceptor, is positively biased to remove the residual negative toner particles from the surface as the second brush contacts the surface.

Abstract: Described herein is a method and apparatus for cleaning charged triboelectric negative toner residual particles (95) from a moving photoreceptor surface (10). A pre-clean corotron (96) having a negative bias applies a negative charge to the photoreceptor surface (10). This increases the negative charge on the residual particles prior to applying a positive bias to the surface (10) using two electrostatic brushes (100, 106) in a dual cleaning system. The second brush (106) is located downsteam of the first brush (100) in the direction of motion of the photoreceptor surface (10) and removes both the charged particles (95; K) having negative charge and the charged particles (95; L) having positive charge after being contacted by the first brush (100).

Abstract: An apparatus for efficient cleaning of the imaging surface. The primary cleaner is a rotating collection roll located directly opposite from andon the other side of the imaging surface from the ul trasonic cleaning assist device. The ultrasonic energy is used to remove the toner from the imaging surface enabling attraction toward the biased collection roll. The ultrasoni c energy decreases the amount of residual toner remaining after transfer. The residual toner that is not cleaned from the surface by the collection roll i s removed from the surface by the rotating biased conductive brush, which is the secondary cleaner. The collection roll is contactless in that it does no t come into contact with the photoreceptor. In another embodiment of the invention, the primary cleaner and the secondary cleaner are collection roll s with ultrasonic cleaning assist devices directly under each collection roll. Abstract: Appts. for cleaning residual material from an imaging surface has a holder (225) attached to a housing at least partially enclosing a primary cleaner (100) downstream of a blade (220) with 20-25% resliency. The blade is coupled to the holder at one end and has free end in pressure contact with the surface. There is min. friction between blade end and surface to permit continuous slidable contact. The blade is pref. of polyesterurethane with durometer of Shore A 80-90. The primary cleaner is pref. a brush.

Abstract: Described herein is a method and apparatus for separating and recovering separately toner particles of one matchable characteristic different color toner contained in a mixture of a plurality of such different color toners. The apparatus includes a housing (204) for holding a quantity of the mixture of a plurality of such different color toners, and a selected particular type of carrier beads characteristically matching, and being more likely to charge, attract and triboelectrically bind with, toner particles of a matching color toner in the mixture of the different color toners than with toner particles of any other color toner therein, and blending means (304, 306, 308, 310, 404, 406, 408, 410) for forming an admixture of a quantity of the mixture of the different color toners and a quantity of the selected particular type of carrier beads such that the admixture has a toner coated carrier phase and a loose toner particles phase, the toner coated carrier phase consisting of the selected particular type of carrier beads coated with toner particles of the matching one color toner of the different color toners of the admixture. Separating mechanisms (312, 314, 318, 320, 322, 412, 414, 418) for separating the toner coated phase from the loose toner particles phase, and a recovery mechanism (316, 416) for separating and removing, from the coated selected particular type of carrier beads of the toner coated phase, the toner particles of the matching one color toner are also provided.

Abstract: A surface layer on an imaging member has a surface roughness which reduces the force necessary for blade cleaning, reduces blade edge tuck, reduces blade/substrate friction, inhibits the formation of toner-type deposits on the imaging surface, and/or reduces or eliminates light interference patterns resulting from coherent light, for example, from a raster output scanner. The surface roughness comprises a lateral roughness of between about 1 micrometer and about 200 micrometers, and a vertical roughness less than or equal to about 1 micrometer. The roughness may be defined by asperites formed by circulation patterns formed in the layer during drying or it may be defined by hemispheric dots of the overcoat layer formed during drying.
