[Class 7 (vi)] A hydraulic device for taking up clearance between a rocker and its cam comprises a hollow plunger 1 fitted in a recess in the rocker and containing a sleeve 3 formed with a partition 4 dividing it into upper and lower chambers 5, 6, the upper acting as a reservoir for oil received from a channel 10 in the rocker, and the lower as a pressure chamber connected to the former by a port 8 and a non-return valve 7 opening downwards. Resilient washers 14 may be interposed between the sleeve 3 and the end of the recess, or a spring may be fitted between the head 1a of the plunger and a cap 12 enclosing the valve 7. Air escapes at an orifice 10a. Adjustment of the plunger may be obtained by forming the recess in a plug screwed into the rocker. The whole device is attached to the rocker by a pin 13 passing through enlarged holes 1b in the plunger, so as to allow axial movement; or a pin may pass through a slot or flat in the side of the plunger.

Said portion (5c) of the cam profile (5') is arranged to control gas exchange through the inlet valve (3), specifically for providing a delay in the closing of the inlet valve (3).

    Abstract: An engine roller lifter for use in a valve train of an internal combustion engine according to one example of the present disclosure includes a body and a groove formed in the body. The body has an outer peripheral surface configured for sliding movement in a bore provided in the engine. The bore is supplied by an oil passage communicating therewith. The body defines an axial pocket that receives a plunger therein. The groove is inset from the outer peripheral surface and formed about only a portion of a circumference of the body. The groove defines a first end and a second end. Only a portion of the first and second ends overlap with the oil passage to regulate the amount of oil supplied to the groove from the oil passage.
