Abstract: A gem 15 is held against a window 4 in a chamber 1 having white, diffusing internal walls, and light is projected onto the gem 15 through an inlet 16 and via a rotating vaned diffusing member 8 having a white diffusing surface. A detector 19 detects the colour of the light reflected from the internal walls of the chamber 1 when the light path is interrupted and when the light path is not interrupted. A rotating wheel 20 containing three differently coloured filters may be placed in front of the detector 19, or two detectors with associated reflecting prisms may be used (Figure 4, not shown).

Abstract: A spectro-photometer having a calibration mechanism and a wavelength-range changeover mechanism is disclosed which is equipped with an operation panel for setting measuring frequencies and function modes, is controlled by a microcomputer to be subjected to the calibration and the changeover of wavelength range in a predetermined order, conducts a predetermined arithmetic operation on the basis of photometric values measured by the spectro-photometer, and further comprises two display elements mounted on the operation panel for performing the following display operation in accordance with a command from the microcomputer. That is, in the calibration period, a code showing that the spectro-photometer is now subjected to calibration, is displayed on one of the display elements, and the number of remaining check items is displayed on the other display element. While, in the wavelength-range changeover period, a code showing that the spectro-photometer is subjected to the wave-length changeover operation, is displayed on one display element, and a waiting time till the termination of wavelength-range changeover operation is displayed on the other display element.

Abstract: The thickness and/or weight of a water-containing composition is measured by an infrared spectrophotometer wherein the attenuation of radient energy at a measuring wavelength which is substantially absorbed by the coating composition is compared with the attenuation of radient energy at a second reference wavelength not substantially absorbed by the coating composition.

Abstract: A method of colorimetrically analyzing even heavily turbid or already strongly colored water by first sensing transmitted light from a light beam through a sample of the fluid, adding color-producing test reagents to the sample, again sensing transmitted light from an identical light beam, and comparing the sensed light readings to detect the change, if any, produced by the added reagents. Two colorimetric cells are used, one for testing before the addition of reagents and the other after, with the cells being defined by glass cylinders in which pistons reciprocate to pump measured samples to the cylinders, clean the cylinders on each pumping stroke, and "valve" or block the light beam so that the other cylinder can be "read". Simple displacement pumps for the reagents, and the cell pistons, cooperate with valves defined by pincher arms squeezing flexible tubing to move measured amounts of sample and reagent throughout the analyzer. A common drive simplifies obtaining proper relative operation of the analyzer components.

Abstract: 1376684 Photo-electric testing COULTER ELECTRONICS Inc 10 Oct 1972 [14 Oct 1971] 46659/72 Heading G1A [Also in Division F1] A cuvette for photometric analysis of a sample comprises a transparent cylinder 28 Fig.3 having upper and lower cylinder heads 76, 64 with central ports 94, 74, a hollow probe 68 depending from the lower port and a free piston-like cylindrical member 84, disposed within the cylinder and having an outer diameter less than the inner diameter of the cylinder 28 by a capillary degree, the member 84 being shaped sealingly to engage O ring 82 which forms an upper valve seat, but to engage the lower cylinder head in a manner permitting the flow of gaseous and liquid fluids through the port when so engaged. The housing around the cuvette includes a lamp source 50 for directing light of a wavelength determined by filter 18 through the cuvette to a photo-cell 26. The cuvette operation is controlled by the programmed application of a vacuum or pressure to the top port, an initial application of gas under pressure serving to mix the sample before it is drawn into the cuvette by a succeeding vacuum, and a final application of pressure serving for scavenging. The member 84 and the cylinder heads may be of carbon.

Abstract: 1,230,228. Colour printing exposure control. MINOLTACAMERA K.K. Dec. 30, 1968, [Dec. 28, 1967], No. 61786/68. Heading G2A. An exposure control system for a colour printer has red, green and blue light detectors R 1-n , G 1-n , B 1-n associated with individual regions A 1-n of the printing plane, the detectors corresponding to each colour being connected in series so that the harmonic mean of the light intensity of each colour in each region may be measured. A switch 12 selectively connects the different colour detectors to a measuring instrument 11 and a power source 10. A diffuser 2À3 may receive the image of a colour negative 1. The individual detectors may be colour sensitive corresponding to the sensitivity of the printing paper, or a combination of filters and photo-conductive cells may be used. The information derived from the measuring system may be used to select colour compensating filters, or to adjust the diaphragm aperture or exposure time of the printing light. The system produces prints in which the high light areas have strictly controlled colour balance, i.e. those regions corresponding to the denser regions of the negative. A mathematical treatment of the system is given in comparison to a conventional system in which a parallel connection of the individual detectors is used.
