    Abstract: An embosser/laminator machine has an adhesive unit releasably connectable with a main frame structure of the machine, and a roll extractor configured to move a roll between the main frame structure and an exchange position between the main frame structure and the adhesive unit when the adhesive unit is spaced from the main frame structure during removal and installation of the roll. The sub-frame comprising the adhesive unit may be formed with a bearing cap that cooperates with the main frame structure such that when the adhesive unit is connected with the main frame structure, the roll is operatively secured to the machine between main frame structure and the sub-frame of the adhesive unit for normal operation of the machine. When the sub-frame comprising the adhesive unit is released and spaced from main frame structure, the roll may be removed from and installed into the main frame structure.

    Abstract: A device and a method is disclosed to maintain plate and anilox mandrel position stability in print decks of a flexographic printing press. In one aspect, the mandrel bearings associated with at least one of the plate roll and the anilox roll are preloaded for the purpose of eliminating backlash and increasing the positional stiffness of the bearings, and thus the mandrel. In another aspect, the roll drive motor control system is enabled to provide a torque additive command the torque profile to maintain rotational consistency and otherwise overcome torque transients experienced by the motor during print bounce. Accordingly, the problem commonly referred to as print bounce and or print banding is alleviated.

    Abstract: A flexible mandrel is provided for holding cores or core segments so that a roll of sheet material can be wound on the core segments in a winding machine. The mandrel and core segments are coupled through elastic interference between the mandrel and the core segments so that the core segments are arranged either adjacent to each other or spaced apart. A method for producing rolls of sheet material on the novel combination of mandrel and core segments feeds cores in an apparatus, transversely cuts the cores to form portions of core or core segments, feeds a flexible mandrel into the core segments for supporting and maintaining the axial position of the core segments. Coupling is by elastic interference between the flexible mandrel and the core segments to form an assembly in which the core segments are arranged on the mandrel spaced apart or adjacent one to the other.

    Abstract: A method is provided for removing mandrels from successive rolls of convolutely wound web material. In one aspect, a roll of web convolutely wound around a mandrel is moved to a position in which the mandrel is aligned with a clasp with the clasp spaced apart from the mandrel. The clasp is then moved along a path toward the roll. Movement of the clasp toward the roll is stopped only when the clasp is in a position to engage the mandrel. The mandrel is engaged with the clasp. The clasp and the mandrel are moved away from the roll to withdraw the mandrel from the roll. The mandrel is released from the clasp when the mandrel is removed from the roll. The mandrel is removed from the path of the clasp. The steps are repeated for a subsequent roll.

    Abstract: A packer forms stacks of segments cut from a web of material. The packer has a shoe that contacts the segment and pushes the segment onto the stack. A follower is operatively connected to the shoe. A drive shaft is operatively connected to a motor. A drive crank is operatively mounted to the drive shaft operatively pivotally connected to the follower. A motion control assembly is configured for synchronized motion with the drive shaft. The motion control assembly has a member operatively connected to the follower. When the drive shaft rotates, the drive crank moves the follower toward and away from a face of the segment and the motion control assembly operates in a manner to move the follower toward and away from a leading edge of the segment.

    Abstract: A core end engagement assembly is provided for a rewinding machine. The core end engagement assembly is configured to engage an end of the core and transmit rotational movement to the core during winding of the web material about the core. The assembly may include a drive housing. A chuck may project from a first end of the drive housing and may be configured to engage the end of the core. A first actuator may reciprocate the drive housing along a central axis of the core between an engagement and disengagement position of the chuck relative to the core. A second actuator may be mounted on the drive housing. The second actuator may be configured and adapted to move the chuck between release and hold positions.     Abstract: A converting line includes a rewinding machine for winding web material into a log. For time points during a time period of the log wind cycle, predictive information representative of a log to be wound is generated and stored in a memory of a control of the rewinding machine. An image capture device is enabled to capture a plurality of images of the log being wound in the winding nest at the plurality of corresponding time points during the time period. Log image capture information is generated based upon the plurality of captured images and corresponding time points during the time period. The log image capture information is compared with the generated predictive log image information to determine a difference in log image. Revised predictive log image information is generated based at least in part upon a difference in the log image capture information relative to predictive log image information.
