    Abstract: AC-3 is a high quality audio compression format widely used in feature films and, more recently, on Digital Versatile Disks (DVD). For consumer applications the algorithm is usually coded into the firmware of a DSP Processor, which due to cost considerations may be capable of only fixed point arithmetic. It is generally assumed that 16-bit processing is incapable of delivering the high fidelity audio, expected from the AC-3 technology. Double precision computation can be utilized on such processors to provide the high quality; but the computational burden of such implementation will be beyond the capacity of the processor to enable real-time operation. Through extensive simulation study of a high quality AC-3 encoder implementation, a multi-precision technique for each processing block is presented whereby the quality of the encoder on a 16-bit processor matches the single precision 24-bit implementation very closely without excessive additional computational complexity.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining parameters for coupling of channels in a digital audio encoder. A frequency range of two audio channels is coupled together in a coupling channel, and a systematic method of determining optimum coupling parameters is employed. Sub-bands of the channels are processed individually, and a measure of the power of each sub-band is used to determine a coupling coefficient generation scheme for each individual sub-band. Adjacent ones of the sub-bands using the same coupling scheme are combined to form bands in the coupling channel, which dictate the generation of the coupling coordinates for the audio channels. The arrangement of the sub-bands in bands also facilitates the generation of phase flags for each band, on the basis of the coupling scheme used in the band.

    Abstract: The preferred embodiment addresses the fixed codebook search portion of the speech codec, to efficiently support two codecs by a single implementation. In particular, the two codecs are G.723.1 (5.3kbps) and G.729A. By modifying the fixed codebook search algorithm of G.723.1 to be similar to that of G.729A would advantageously result in a single fixed codebook search algorithm being used for both these codecs. Present G.723.1 fixed codebook search algorithms are based on "Focused Nested-loop search". Proposing a new G.723.1 codebook search algorithm to be based on "Depth-first tree search" would then have the desired effect of having one fixed codebook search for both G.723.1 and G.729A.

    Abstract: LOW POWER DOWNMIX ENERGY EQUALIZATION IN PARAMETRIC STEREO ENCODERS A method and audio device are presented that preserve mono energy during downmixing of a hybrid coding process of an audio signal. The method includes calculating a stereo scaling factor in a group level that is definable within a stereo band. The method may also include updating the stereo scaling factor using an update rate and synchronizing the update rate of a spatial parameter during a fast changing transient portion of the signal. A number of groups in a first stereo band may be greater than a number of groups in a second stereo band, and the first stereo band may be a lower frequency band than the second band or may be perceptually more important than the second band.

    Abstract: An edge enhancement system, including a selective edge controller for determining one or more properties of an edge of image data, and for generating one or more weighting factors on the basis of properties of the edge; and a scaling module for scaling an edge enhancement signal by the weighting factors to control the degree of edge enhancement. The image data may represent a still or moving (i.e., video) image. A max-min search circuit determines maximum and minimum turning points closest to the center of the data processing window and that are located on opposing sides of the window, to determine values and locations of maximum and minimum pixels of the edge. An edge-directed prefiltering circuit reduces the amplification of edge fuzziness by smoothing close the edges vertical prior to enhancement. An aliasing protection circuit reduces the visibility of sawtooth defects on predominantly horizontal diagonal edges.
