Abstract: Catalyst containing copper for decomposition of dinitrogen monoxide contains a metal oxide-alumina compound, in which the metal is copper and optionally zinc and/or magnesium and is present in an amount ranging from 0.8 to 1.5 times the stoichiometric amount for a spinel. Catalyst containing copper for decomposition of dinitrogen monoxide (N2O) contains a compound of formula (I). MxAl2O4 (I) M = copper or mixtures of copper with zinc and/or magnesium; and x = 0.8-1.5. Independent claims are also included for 2 methods of preparing the catalyst.

Independent claims are also included for: (A) an apparatus for the production of nitric acid from ammonia comprising a reactor for catalytically oxidizing ammonia to nitrogen oxides containing a catalyst for decomposing N2O arranged between a precious metal lattice catalyst and a heat exchanger, and an absorber for nitrogen oxides, and a reducer for reducing nitrogen oxides; and (B) a process for catalytically decomposing N2O comprising contacting a hot gas mixture produced from the catalytically oxidation of ammonia with the catalyst for decomposing N2O before subsequent cooling.
