    Abstract: A process for the preparation of succinic acid diesters by carbonylation of acrylic acid esters in the presence of alcohols, using a cobalt carbonyl complex as the catalyst and a heterocyclic nitrogen base as the promoter, at 80 DEG -200 DEG C. and under a carbon monoxide pressure of 60-300 bar, wherein the reaction is carried out in the presence of not less than 20% by weight, based on the amount of all the liquid constituents of the reaction mixture, of an inert liquid and the concentration of the acrylic acid ester is kept, for the predominant part of the reaction time, at below 15% by weight, again based on the amount of all liquid constituents.

    Abstract: Process for prepn. of butane-1,4-diol, and 2-methylpropane-1,3-diol, and of their mono- and diacetates, takes place by (1) hydrogenating butan-1-al-4-yl acetate and 2-methyl-propan-1-al-3-yl acetate in the presence of (a) 2-8 (3-5) mol. MeOH (w.r.t. starting materials) and (b) catalytic concns. of an acid, (A), at 80-150 degrees C under 20-200 bar, using a hydrogenation catalyst, and (2) opt. converting the butan-1-ol-4-yl acetate and 2-methylpropan-1-ol-3-yl acetate, obtd. as hydrogenation prods., to the free diols, by hydrolysis, or to the diacetates, by esterification. Prods. are useful components for varnishes and polyurethanes and crosslinking agents for textile finishes. Presence of MeOH and acid (A) causes acetalisation of formyl gp. in starting materials. Acetalisation suppresses AcOH dissociation, as side-reaction, as observed in hydrogenation of the free aldehydes. Prod. yield in methyl acetal hydrogenation is increased to 89-98%, compared to diol yields of 30-40% in free aldehyde hydrogenation.

    Abstract: Acetals of 1,4-dicyano-2-formyl butane of formula (where R = 1-6C esp. 1-4C alkyl). As intermediates in the prepn. of polyfunctional cpds. which are used as surfactants and in the prepn. of plastics. Suitable yields for technical adaption. By reaction of 1,4-dicyano-butene-1 or -2 with CO and H2 at 100-150 degrees C, esp. 120-140 degrees C, and 150-400 atmos, esp. 200-300 atmos, in the presence of alkanol ROH and cobalt carbonyl. CO and H2 are used in a vol. ratio 1:4-4:1 esp. 1:2-1 and the mixt. is pref. used in an excess up to 10 times. The catalyst can be prepd. in situ and pref. contains 0.1-1.5 wt.% Co (calc. on the cyano cpd.) esp. 0.5-1.0 wt.% Co. At least 2 mol. ROH are used per equiv. of formyl gps. Reaction is carried out in the presence of polymerisation inhibitors e.g. hydroquinone as 0.1-1 wt.%.
