Abstract: Catalytic gas phase oxidation of propene to acrylic acid involves using two different fixed bed catalysts, in different reaction zones, with active components comprising multi-metal oxides of different composition and containing iron, molybdenum and optionally bismuth. Catalytic gas phase oxidation of propene to acrylic acid comprises: (i) reacting O2 and propene in a ratio of at least 1 and an inert gas; (ii) passing over a fixed bed catalyst (FBC) (FBC1), comprising a multi-metal oxide containing at least Mo, Fe and Bi, in a reaction zone (RZ) (A), the propene conversion and the subsequent acrolein and acrylic acid product formation being at least 90 mol.%, optionally in the presence of oxygen and/or inert gas in a ratio of O2:propene of at least 0.5; and (iii) passing over a second FBC (FBC2), comprising a predischarge active component(s) comprising a multi-metal oxide(s) containing at least Mo and Fe and a postdischarge active component(s) comprising a multi-metal oxide(s) containing at least Mo and V at least one of which also contains an amount of Bi that is smaller than in the first FBC, where the amount of Fe in a postdischarge component(s) is lower than in a predischarge component(s), in a second RZ (B), which is at a lower temperature than RZ (A), to give an acrolein conversion in RZ (B) of at least 90 mol.% and an acrylic acid selectivity over both reaction zones of at least 80 mol %.

Abstract: In the production of acrolein and/or acrylic acid from propane, the oxygen required in reaction stage 1 (catalytic dehydrogenation to propene) is supplied in the form of air and at least some of the N2 in the residual gas from final product work-up is removed before this gas is recycled to stage 1. A process for the production of acrolein (AC) and/or acrylic acid (AA) from propane, involving (1) partial oxydehydrogenation to propene with molecular oxygen using homogeneous and/or heterogeneous catalysts, (2) catalytic gas-phase oxidation of the propene-containing product gas in further stage(s) to give AC and/or AA, (3) separation of AC and/or AA and water and (4) recycling the unreacted propane in the residual gas back to stage 1. In this process, the molecular oxygen required in stage 1 (other than circulating oxygen) is added to the starting gas mixture in the form of air, and at least some of the N2 is separated from the residual gas before this is recycled to stage 1.

Abstract: In the production of acrolein and/or acrylic acid from propane, the oxygen required in reaction zone 1 (catalytic dehydrogenation to propene) is supplied as nitrogen-containing modified air containing less N2 and more O2 than normal air and some of the N2 in the off-gas from further zones (propene oxidation) is removed before recycling to zone 1. A process for the production of acrolein (AC) and/or acrylic acid (AA) from propane, involving (a) partial oxydehydrogenation to propene with molecular oxygen in a first reaction zone (1) using homogeneous and/or heterogeneous catalysts, (b) further catalytic gas-phase oxidation of the unseparated product gas mixture in further reaction zone(s) (2) to give AC and/or AA, (c) separation of AC and/or AA and water from the product mixture and (d) recycling unreacted propane to zone 1. In this process, the molecular oxygen required in zone 1 (other than circulating oxygen) is added to the starting gas mixture in the form of nitrogen-containing modified air with a lower N2 content and a higher O2 content than normal air, and at least some of the molecular N2 in the residual gas stream is removed before this stream is recycled to zone 1.

Abstract: A multimetal oxide of formula (I) Mo12-a-b-cVaM bM cOx is new, where: M = tungsten (W) and/or niobium (Nb); M = titanium (Ti), zirconium (Zr), hafnium (Hf), tantalum (Ta), chromium (Cr), silicon (Si) and/or germanium (Ge); a = 0.1-6; b = 0-6; c = 0-6; a+b+c = 0.1-6; and x = number determined by the valency and frequency of the element in (I) except oxygen. Its atomic space arrangement is determined by powder X-ray diffraction (the intensity A of the diffracted X-ray beam as a function of two-fold diffraction angle (2&thetas; )) using Cu-K alpha -radiation ( lambda = 1.54178 Angstrom ), so that in the 2&thetas; region of 5-50 degrees the following diffraction lines are produced: Al(X-ray diffraction line) = 8.3 plus or minus 0.7 (2&thetas; degrees ); A2=14.4 plus or minus 0.7; A3=22.3 plus or minus 0.2; A4=23.5 plus or minus 0.7; A5=27.2 plus or minus 0.4; A6=32.0 plus or minus 0.8; A7=34.8 plus or minus 0.6; A8=38.7 plus or minus 0.5; A9=45.4 plus or minus 0.4; and A10=48.8 plus or minus 0.4.
