Abstract: Disclosed is a method of forming a doped glass article. Heated glass particles are deposited on a mandrel where they adhere together to form a porous glass preform having interconnective pores. The mandrel is removed to form a tubular preform having an axial aperture. The preform is suspended in a consolidation furnace by a gas conducting handle having a dopant containing chamber. As the handle and preform are heated, there is flowed through the chamber a gas that reacts with the heated dopant to form a reactant gas that flows into the aperture and into pores, whereby a dopant is incorporated into the porous glass preform. The doped preform is heat treated to consolidate it into an elongated non-porous glass body containing the dopant. The glass body can be provided with cladding glass and drawn into an optical fiber.

Abstract: A fiber optic coupler of the type wherein first and second single-mode optical fibers, each having a core and a cladding, are fused together along a portion of the lengths thereof to form a coupling region. The fiber diameters are smaller in the coupling region than in the the remainder of the fibers. The cladding of the second fiber contains an amount of chlorine sufficient to increase the refractive index n'_2 thereof to a value greater than the refractive index n2 of the cladding of the first fiber.

Abstract: Disclosed is a dispersion compensating and dispersion slope compensating single mode optical waveguide fiber. The refractive index profiles of waveguide fibers in accord with the invention are disclosed and described. These index profiles provide a waveguide fiber having negative total dispersion and negative total dispersion slope so that a standard waveguide fiber is compensated over an extended wavelength range. A telecommunications link using the fiber in accord with the invention is also disclosed and described. A standard fiber to compensating fiber length ratio in the range of 1:1 to 3:1 is shown to give optimum link performance with respect to limiting non-linear dispersion effects.
