Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus for measuring the properties of an optical waveguide fiber. The apparatus is free of apertures, lenses, and mirrors usually required in the measurement of certain waveguide fiber properties. The apparatus employs an optical switch at the launch end of the optical fiber to be tested and another optical switch at the output end of the optical fiber to be tested. The switches preserve the mode power distribution, particularly the spot size, of light passing therethrough. The apparatus may be used to measure bandwidth or attenuation of a multimode waveguide fiber, both of which are affected by launched and detected mode power distribution.

Abstract: Se describe un aparato para medir las propiedades de una fibra optica de guia de ondas; el aparato esta libre de aberturas, lentes y espejos habitualmente necesarios en la medicion de algunas propiedades de fibra de gula de ondas; el aparato utiliza un conmutador optico en el extremo de lanzamiento de la fibra optica que se va a probar y otro conmutador optico en el extremo de salida de la fibra optica que se va a probar; los conmutadores conservan la distribucion del modo de energia, particularmente el tamano de punto, de la luz que a pasa a traves de los mismos; el aparato se puede utilizar para medir el ancho de banda o la atenuacion de una fibra de guia de onda de modo multiple, ambos parametros los cuales se afectan por la distribucion del modo de energia de lanzamiento y detectado.
