Abstract: A lubricant which comprises: a mineral oil basestock which has been dewaxed via catalytic cracking and/or catalytic isomerization; an alkylene-alkylene copolymer; and a lubricating oil flow improver formed from the reaction product of: (a) an unsaturated carboxy ester formed via the esterification of an unsaturated carboxylic acid or its corresponding anhydride with a monohydric aliphatic alcohol having an average carbon number of between about 10 to 18, the unsaturated carboxy ester having formula (I), wherein R' is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and COOR and wherein R is a C6 to C22 alkyl group; and (b) a monomer selected from the group consisting of (i) a vinyl ester having formula (II), wherein R1 comprises an alkyl grou p containing from 1 to 18 carbon atoms; (ii) an olefin having formula (III), wherein R1 and R2 can independently be hydrogen, an alkyl having from 1 to 28 carbon atoms, or a substituted aryl group, provided that both R1 and R2 are not hydrogen, the reaction product having a specific viscosity in the range between about 0.3 to 1.5, or a weight average molecular weight of between about 50,000 to 350,000 Daltons.

Abstract: Oil-soluble dispersant additives are disclosed. The additives comprise the reaction product of a functionalized 1-butene copolymer and at least one nucleophilic reactant selected from amines, amino alcohols, alcohols, and reactive metal compounds. The functionalized copolymer has within its structure at least one acyl functional group selected from the group consisting of C4 to C10 dicarboxylic acids and derivatives thereof and C3 to C10 monocarboxylic acids and derivatives thereof. The 1-butene copolymer is derived from 1-butene and at least one other .alpha.-olefin of the formula CH2=CHR', wherein R' is methyl or a C3 to C12 linear or branched alkyl group . The copolymer has a number average molecular weight of at least about 700, a molecular weight distribution of less than 5, and ethenylidene groups terminating at least about 30 % of all polymer chains. The dispersant additives are useful in oleaginous compositions including lubricating oil compositions and concentrates and fuel compositions.

Abstract: Polymers (including copolymers) derived from one or more olefins, such including ethylene and C3-C20 alpha-olefins such as propylene and 1-butene, which polymers have (a) an average ethylene sequence length, ESL, of from, about 1.0 to less than about 3.0; (b) an average of at least 5 branches per 100 carbon atoms of the polymer chains comprising the polymer; (c) at least about 50% of said branches being methyl and/or ethyl branches; (d) at least about 30% of said polymer chains terminated with a vinyl or vinylene group; (e) a number average molecular weight, Mn, of from about 300 to about 15,000 when the polymer is intended for dispersant or wax crystal modifier uses and up to about 500,000 where intended for viscosity modifier uses; and (f) substantial solubility in hydrocarbon and/or synthetic base oil. The polymers are produced using late-transition-metal catalyst systems and, preferably, inexpensive, highly dilute refinery or steam cracker feed streams that have undergone only limited clean-up steps. Fuel and lubricating oil additives, particularly dispersants, wax crystal modifiers and flow improvers, are produced. Where functionalization and derivatization of these polymers is required for such additives it is facilitated by the olefinic structures available in the polymer chains.
