Abstract: A client computer system is suitable for connection to a data processing network having a controlling system. The controlling system is operable to issue a wake-up request to the client computer system. The wake-up request is issued by means of a wireless connection between the controlling system and the client computer system. The client computer system, on receipt of a wake-up request, powers itself on so as to allow normal operation of the client computer system. The wireless link may be a satellite or a DECT system. The client computer system may allow the simultaneous provision of both a data and a speech link using a DECT link.

Abstract: A display device comprises a substrate 310, a cathode 20 for emitting electrons, a permanent magnet and one or more supports 504,902 between the substrate and the magnet. A two dimensional array of channels extends between opposite poles of the magnet, the magnet generating, in each channel, a magnetic field for forming electrons from the cathode 20 into an electron beam. A screen 308 receives an electron beam from each channel, the screen having a phosphor coating 150 facing the side of the magnet remote from the cathode, the phosphor coating comprising a plurality of pixels each corresponding to a different channel. Orthogonal grid electrodes 71,72 are disposed between the cathode and the magnet for controlling flow of electrons from the cathode into each channel, each grid electrode having a plurality of apertures (fig 12), each aperture corresponding to one of the channels. The apertures are of varying diameter or shape, e.g. elliptical, in the vicinity of the supports 504,902 such that localised variations in the emission of electrons by the cathode caused by the supports 504,902 are compensated. The display also has spacers 502 between the screen and the magnet, and anodes 302,304 for accelerating electrons through the channels. The anodes 302,304 are of varying shape in the vicinity of the spacers 502 such that localised variations in the electron beam shape and position caused by the spacers 502 are compensated.

Abstract: A display system comprises a display screen including a matrix of display elements and a permanent magnet having an array of channels formed therein. Each channel corresponds to a different display element. Each display element comprises a phosphor target, an electron source and means for controlling flow of electrons from the source through the corresponding channel in the magnet onto the target. Addressing means comprises first and second orthogonal conductors defining a grid. Each display element is located at the intersection of a different pair of first and second conductors. Each first conductor is connected to a first control electrode of the control means of each display element in a corresponding line of display elements and each second conductor is connected to a second control electrode of the control means of each display element in a corresponding line of display elements.

Abstract: A display device comprises a cathode 20 and a permanent magnet 60. A two dimensional array of rows and columns of channels 70 extends between opposite poles of the magnet for receiving electrons from the cathode. A screen 90 has a plurality of phosphor pixels 80 each corresponding to a different channel and each comprising a plurality of sub-pixels facing the side of the magnet remote from the cathode. Grid electrode means 40 is disposed between the cathode means and the magnet. A plurality of pairs of anodes 50 are disposed between the magnet and the screen and extending parallel to the columns of channels. Each pair 51,52 corresponds to a different column of channels and each pair has first and second anodes extending along opposite sides of the corresponding column of channels. Address means supplies control signals to the grid electrode means 40 to selectively control flow of electrons from the cathode through each channel to the corresponding pixel. An anode drive circuit 53 supplies anode drive signals to the first and second anodes 51,52 respectively. The anode drive circuit comprises bias means 56 for generating an acceleration component of each anode drive signal for accelerating electrons through the channels, deflection means 57,58 for generating a deflection component of each anode drive signal for deflecting electrons emerging from each channel towards different sub-pixels of the corresponding pixel, and correction means 59 for varying the deflection component to align the deflected electron beams with the corresponding sub-pixels. For a cylindrical screen 90, the correction means is a parabola generator. The display device may include a focus electrode (120, fig 9) which may also be driven with a parabolic waveform.

Abstract: A display system comprises a digital video source coupled to a digital display device via an digital interface having a timing channel for carrying a pixel clock signal from the video source to the display device and a digital video channel for carrying a digital video bit stream from the video source to the display device. The video source comprises a pixel clock generator for generating the pixel clock signal, palette logic for outputting a pixel word on each pulse of the pixel clock signal, shift clock logic for multiplying the pixel clock signal by the number of bits in the pixel word to produce a shift clock signal, and serialiser logic for serially outputting the pixel word in the serial bit stream at the shift clock signal rate. The display device comprises a display screen for producing a pixel of an image in response to the pixel word; shift clock generator logic for multiplying the pixel clock signal by the number of bits in the pixel word, and deserialiser logic for receiving the input video bit stream at the shift clock signal rate to re-generate the pixel word from the video bit stream.

Abstract: Display apparatus comprises a display screen (400) and a drive circuit (401) connected to the display screen (400) to generate an image on the display screen (400) in response to an input video signal (R,G,B). A timer (405) generates a count in response to a clock signal. A detector (403,404,402) also receives the input video signal and resets the timer (405) on detection of a change in image content between successive frames of the input video signal (R,G,B). Control means (402) is connected to the timer (405) and to the drive circuit (401) for at least partially disabling the drive circuit (401) in response to the count stored in the timer (405) exceeding a predetermined threshold.
