    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To consider the activity of a user in a work station and to reduce the loss of data transmission time between a client system and a server by predicting the type of a software module based on a using history and automatically performing transfer based on the monitoring of a traffic level. SOLUTION: A server system 20 transmits a first software module type to a connected client system 30. A control software predicts the type of the software module assumed to be requested by the same client based on a data gathering software or compiled history information. The control software decides whether or not LAN traffic is smaller than a certain threshold value, and when it is so, makes a push software push the predicted module to the client 30.

    Abstract: A power line connection socket 102 for use with a building power line circuit comprises connectors for connecting to a building power line circuit, and connectors for attachment of an asset, whereby the asset receives power from the building power line circuit through the socket. The socket also comprises a power line modem 208 for transmission of data including a unique identifier 206 associated with the socket via the building power line circuit. An asset monitor, associated with an asset, 106 is supplied with power from the socket, in an asset tracking system, the asset monitor comprising a unique identifier 202 associated with the asset monitor, and a power line modem 204 for transmission of data, including the unique identifier, from the asset monitor to the power line connection socket. A management server, having a power line modem connected to the building power line circuit, stores the unique identifier associated with an asset together with the unique identifier associated with a power line connection socket.

    Abstract: A client computer system is suitable for connection to a data processing network having a controlling system. The controlling system is operable to issue a wake-up request to the client computer system. The wake-up request is issued by means of a wireless connection between the controlling system and the client computer system. The client computer system, on receipt of a wake-up request, powers itself on so as to allow normal operation of the client computer system. The wireless link may be a satellite or a DECT system. The client computer system may allow the simultaneous provision of both a data and a speech link using a DECT link.

The software modules are of a number of different types, each type providing a different service at the client system (e.g. e-mail, text editor etc). The predicted software module is then transferred to the client system in advance of any request for same from the client.

    Abstract: A client is arranged so that at power up it makes a request to a server for first boot code which allows the client to boot from its own mass storage. Since the OS is not sent from the server over the network, traffic flow is eased whilst strict control of client software type is maintained. The configuration of a client may be checked prior to software, particularly OS, installation by a server. The server, detecting a new client on the network, down-loads scan code onto the client. The client then runs the scan code and returns hardware configuration data to the server. If the OS of the client is to be modified then the server sends different, second boot code to the client which instructs the client to boot (a new OS) directly from the server. The OS from the server is then installed on the client mass storage device, and subsequent IPLs take place using the first boot code.

    Abstract: A data processing network comprises a plurality of client systems and a controlling system which transmits "broadcast" data packets which may be received by any of the client systems attached to the network. The client system, on initial connection to the network, analyses the transmitted "broadcast" data packets and determines the network protocols in use on the network. The client system then configures software located at the client system so as to use one of the network protocols in use on the network. Furthermore, the client system customises the operating parameters it uses to communicate with the network so as to optimise the performance of communication with the network. Additionally, the client systems may, optionally, analyse transmitted non-broadcast data packets.

    Abstract: Objects can be tracked within a building using a radio device 120 associated with each object to be tracked and an array of transmitting beacons 102,104,106,108,110,112. Each of the beacons transmits identification data. The received identification data from the object to be tracked is sent to a server which determines the location of the object. The identification data may be sent from the object to the server using a data communications network such as a local area network. The beacons may have a variable power output allowing the receipt 132 or non-receipt 232 of the signal from the beacon to be used to assist in locating the object. The beacons may be associated with an existing wireless communication mechanism, such as Bluetooth.
