Abstract: The invention provides a spread spectrum communication system for maintaining an initial transmit power level of a communication station during periods of inactivity. The system comprises a first station (501) and a second station (502), the initial transmit power level of which is maintained, wherein the first station generates an automatic power control signal by comparing a measured noise power level in a communication channel and an estimated system transmit power level and the second station occasionally transmits a spread spectrum signal whilst in an inactive state and receives the automatic power control signal to adjust an initial transmit power level thereof.

Abstract: The present invention relates to communications for communication systems. The communication includes an antenna system which is coupled to an RF receiver/transmitter which in tum is coupled to other signal processing equipment including at least one modem for processing individual CDMA communications. Preferably the antenna system includes multiple antennas and delay units and outputs a combined signal having a known distortion imparted by the antenna system. The combined signal is in turn processed by the modem. The modem compensates for the known distortion in a manner which provides improved signal gain. The improved signal gain permits a reduction in transmit power and, accordingly, increased capacity of the CDMA system. Where the antenna system is to be remotely located from the signal processing equipment, separate units for the RF receiver/transmitter and the other signal processing equipment are provided so that the RF receiver/transmitter may also be remotely located along with the antenna system. Preferably a connecting cable of at least 20 feet is provided which supplies RF signals and DC power to the RF receiver/transmitter from the other signal processing equipment.

Abstract: A base station using a method of controlling initial power ramp-up in CDMA systems by using short codes is disclosed for controlling transmission power during the establishment of communications between a base station and another communicating unit is disclosed. The base station includes means for detecting a periodic signal having an initial predetermined power level, which is repeatedly sent to the base station at increasing power levels; means for transmitting a confirmation signal when a periodic signal having a sufficient power for detection is received; and means for receiving a call signal transmitted subsequent to the confirmation signal transmitting. The disclosed base station is particularly useful for overcoming the problems of power overshoot and interference to other base stations known in the art and to provide for a base station to quickly synchronize to the spreading code used by the communicating unit.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a communication station for communicating with a second station in a cellular-communication network using spread spectrum modulation wherein the second station transmits power commands to the communication station based on a received power level from the communication station, the communication station comprising: a transmitter having an adjustable transmitter power level for transmitting spread-spectrum signals; means for sequentially receiving power commands from a second station with which communication is being conducted; means for comparing a sequence of at least two of the received power commands to determine if the received commands in the sequence match; and means for adjusting the transmitter power level at a same rate as the reception of the power commands; wherein if the command sequence matches the transmitter power level is adjusted by a different amount than if the command sequence does not match. A method for adjusting a transmitter power level is also disclosed.
