Abstract: Prodn. of oligopeptide compsns. is effected by sensitising keratinic material and then subjecting it to hydrolysis with proteolytic and/or keratolytic enzymes. Sensitisation is effected by treatment with (a) an electrolyte soln. with a concn. of at least 8M, (b) a polar solvent, (c) ultrasound or (d) HCOOH at a concn. above 90 wt.%. Methods (c) and (d) apply only to "cuticular" keratinic materials. The compsns. can be used in cosmetics for hair and skin care or in the foodstuffs industry. Sensitisation as above increases the degree of hydrolysis of untreated keratinic materials (e.g. hair, feathers or horn) without causing destruction of cystine.

Abstract: A process is claimed for the determn. of the ionic state (-), the ionic state (+) and the neutral ionic state of the surface of keratin fibres, esp. human hair. The neutral state is defined as the condition of natural hair which has not been subjected to any treatment to modify the ionic charge. A sample of the hair to be examined is treated with a soln. at an acid pH contg. an acid or basic dye, and any change in colour of the soln. is determined. The test is simple and can be carried out rapidly by non-technical personnel. The test is useful in beauty concelling for determining the state of the hair prior to recommendation of suitable cosmetic treatment.
