Abstract: Methods and systems are disclosed that provide conditional assignments to access terminals over resources assigned to other access terminals. A plurality of resources having persistent assignments to the other access terminals are processed to determine a gap in transmissions. The resources that can be conditionally utilized by the access terminals are determined and a signal indicative of such conditionally assigned resources is transmitted. The access terminals receive the signal and accordingly utilize the conditionally assigned resources. Abstract: Techniques for transmitting pilot and traffic data are described. In one aspect, a terminal may scramble its pilot with a scrambling sequence generated based on a set of static and dynamic parameters. The static parameter(s) have fixed value for an entire communication session for the terminal. The dynamic parameter(s) have variable value during the communication session. The terminal may generate a scrambling sequence by hashing the set of parameters to obtain a seed and initializing a PN generator with the seed. The terminal may then generate the pilot based on the scrambling sequence. In another aspect, the terminal may use different scrambling sequences for pilot and traffic data. A first scrambling sequence may be generated based on a first set of parameters and used to generate the pilot. A second scrambling sequence may be generated based on a second set of parameters and used to scramble traffic data.

Abstract: A shared signaling channel can be used in an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) communication system to provide signaling, acknowledgement, and power control messages to access terminals within the system. The shared signaling channel can be assigned to a predetermined number of sub-carriers within any frame. The assignment of a predetermined number of sub-carriers to the shared signaling channel establishes a fixed bandwidth overhead for the channel. The actual sub-carriers assigned to the channel can be varied periodically, and can vary according to a predetermined frequency hopping schedule. The amount of signal power allocated to the signaling channel can vary on a per symbol basis depending on the power requirements of the communication link. The shared signaling channel can direct each message carried on the channel to one or more access terminals. Unicast messages allow the channel power to be controlled per the needs of individual communication links.
