    Abstract: In television image size altering apparatus of the type wherein pixels relating to a composite video signal are sampled at a synchronous real time rate and wherein the flow of pixel information is coordinated through a memory by a write control and a read control, the composite pixel information is separated into original pixels relating to each basic component of the video signal. Interpolated pixel values are then derived from the original pixel values at an effective rate less than the synchronous rate when compressing the image size and at an effective rate greater than the synchronous rate when expanding the image size. The interpolated pixel values are then combined into new pixel values relating to a new composite video signal and the new pixel values are presented for display at the synchronous rate to alter the size of the television image.

    Abstract: A digital TV system reduces the data rate by transmitting or recording only bytes representing half of the sampled pixels. Steering bits are also transmitted that tell which of the transmitted bytes are the closest match to the untransmitted bytes so the pixels represented by the later can be reconstructed. The steering or control bits are repeated for subsequent omitted bytes unless it no longer indicates a match within a selected tolerance or threshold.

    Abstract: A progressively scanned video signal is encoded into temporal sum and difference components for transmission. The sum signal is temporally filtered, decimated and time expended to be compatible with interlaced receivers. The difference signal, also temporally filtered, decimated and time expanded, is conveyed via single or separate channels with the sum signal to a progressive scan receiver for reconstitution of the original progressive scan signal. Modified quadrature amplitude modulation is used to convey the sum and difference signals in a common channel.

    Abstract: A hierarchy of video standards is provided in a recording format for video record and replay systems to achieve performance flexibility, such as in regard to television studio and portable recording equipment. This recording format divides the tape into a plurality (6, 7) of longitudinal segments with each segment being assigned to tracks in which full raster information (Y, I, Q) is recorded at a fractional resolution equal to the quotient of one divided by the number of the plurality of longitudinal tape segments. For example, pixels of the respective raster scan lines may be distributed across the segments; odd number raster scan lines may be in one segment, even number lines in the other; or odd and even fields may be in respective segments; thereby allowing full or half resolution. Recording formats are illustrated (Fig 1, 5, 7c, 8c, 11), as are head arrangements (Figs. 3, 6, 7B, 8B). Record/replay arrangements are detailed (Figs. 9, 10, 12).

    Abstract: A system is provided for filtering and demodulating digital color mixture signals, wherein the signals are filtered to remove out-of-band noise prior to completion of the demodulation process. Interleaved digital chrominance signal samples are first demodulated by a signal related in frequency to the video subcarrier to obtain interleaved color mixture signal samples of different sampling phases at baseband frequencies. The interleaved color mixture signal samples are applied to a digital filter at a rate which is a multiple of the color subcarrier frequency. The weighting coefficients of the filter are selected to obtain a bandwidth which passes the color mixture signal while removing out of band noise. Since the input signal sequence to the digital filter contains interleaved color mixture signal samples, alternate stages of the filter shift register are tapped, so that the output sequence will comprise filtered and interleaved color mixture signal samples. An output sampling switch accomplishes phase demodulation of the output sequence by selecting samples at a reduced sampling rate in accordance with the Nyquist criterion of the color signals and produces either one or two output sequences of filtered and fully demodulated color mixture signals. Tapped shift register stages of the digital filter may be coupled to two different sets of weighting coefficients and signal combining stages. The filter outputs may thus exhibit unequal bandwidths for filtered color mixture signals, which are commensurate with the desired bandwidths of the filtered signals.
