    Abstract: This invention relates to the polymerization of alpha -olefins and to catalysts and cocatalysts for that purpose wherein the polymerization is carried out in the presence of a catalyst comprising an organometallic compound of a metal of Groups Ia, IIa, IIb, IIIa, and IVa of the Periodic Table and a solid cocatalyst comprising the reaction product of a halogenating agent, an organic oxygenated compound of a divalent metal, and a derivative of a transition metal of Groups IVb, Vb, and VIb of the Periodic Table, the proportions of halogenating agent and organic oxygenated compound being that required to result in a reaction product thereof having an atomic ratio of halogen/divalent metal greater than 1. The invention also comprises the method of making the cocatalysts.

    Abstract: 1275641 Olefin polymerization SOLVAY & CIE 16 Dec 1969 [6 Jan 1969] 706/69 Heading C3P Olefins are polymerized or copolymerized in the presence of (a) an organometallic compound of a metal of Group I, II, III or IV of the Periodic Table; and (b) an activated solid having reactive groups derived from a transition metal compound and obtained by reacting a halide, oxyhalide or polyhalogenoalkoxide of a transition metal of Group IVa, Va or VIa of the Periodic Table with a compound of formula X m-n M(OR) n , wherein M is a Group Ia, IIa, IIb, IIIb or VIIa metal, or boron, X is a monovalent inorganic radical, R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical containing from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, m is the valency of M, n is a whole number such that 1#n#m, the molar ratio of organometallic compound to transition metal in the activated solid being at least 2 : 1. In the examples: (1) ethylene is polymerized in nhexane in the presence of hydrogen utilizing as the organometallic component aluminium triisopropyl, Al(C 2 H 5 ) 2 Cl, Zn(C 2 H 5 ) 2 , Li(C 4 H 9 ), Sn(C 4 H 9 ) 3 H, Al(CH 3 ) 3 , Al(C 2 H 5 ) 2 H, or polyisobutyl-aluminium-isoprene (prepared by reaction of isoprene and triisobutylaluminium or diisobutylaluminium halide and as the activated solid the reaction product of TiCl 4 , TiCl 3 (OC 2 H 5 ), TiI 4 , VOCl 3 or VCl 4 with Mg(OC 2 H 5 ) 2 , Mg(OCH 3 ) 2 , Mg(OC 6 H 6 ) 2 , NaOCH 3 , aluminium isopropylate, Mg(O n C 8 H 17 ) 2 , magnesium benzylate, magnesium cyclohexylate, magnesium paracresate, Mg(OH)(OCH 3 ), MgCl(OC 6 H 5 ), Ca- (OC 2 H 5 ) 2 , Mn(OC 2 H 5 ) 2 /NaCl, [Al(OC 2 H 5 ) 6 ] 2 Mg 3 , [Al(OC 2 H 5 ) 4 ] 2 Mg, and Ca.Mg(OC 2 H 5 ) 4 ; (2) propylene or a mixture of ethylene and propylene are polymerized in hexane in the presence of hydrogen using as catalyst a mixture of aluminium triisopropyl and the reaction product of TiCl 4 and Mg(OC 6 H 5 ) 2 .

The polymerization of olefines and diolefines is carried out in the presence of a catalyst comprising the reaction product of a transition metal compound and a nitrogenous hydroxylfree macromolecular compound, the product being activated by a metal, hydride or an organometallic compound of a metal of Group I to III of the Mendeleeff Periodic Table. The macromolecular compound may contain amino, imino, amido, imido, urethane, nitrile and/or nitro groups and suitable compounds are a polyamide, polyurethane, polyacrylamide or a polymer derived from a nitrogenous heterocyclic compound having a vinyl group. The transition metal compound is preferably a halogenated derivative of a Group IV A , V A or VI A metal such as the halides, oxyhalides and alkoxy-halides of titanium and vanadium. Suitable activators are alkyl aluminium and alkyl aluminium halide compounds. In the examples, ethylene, propylene, ethylene and propylene, and ethylene, propylene, and dicyclopentadiene are polymerized using the following catalyst systems: (1) the reaction product of titanium tetrachloride or vanadium oxychloride with the polycondensation product of #- aminodecanoic acid, followed by activation with tri-n-propyl aluminium or tri-isobutyl aluminium; (2) the reaction product of the above transition metal compounds with the polycondensation product of adipic acid and hexamethylene diamine, activated with tri-isobutyl aluminium; (3) the reaction product of titanium tetrachloride with the polyurethane formed from butenediol-1,4 and hexamethylene diamine diisocyanate, followed by activation with triisobutyl aluminium; (4) the reaction product of titanium tetrachloride with a polyacrylamide, a polyacrylonitrile, or a polyvinylcarbazole, followed by activation with tri-isobutyl aluminium.

    Abstract: Olefins are polymerized in the presence of (1) an alkyl aluminium, (2) an alkoxide of a metal of Group IVa of the Periodic Table, and (3) a product of reaction between a transition metal compound and a solid carrier constituted by a hydroxychloride of a bivalent metal, the alkyl aluminium being present in a molar excess in relation to the transition-metal compounds. The catalyst may be prepared in the presence of ethylene. Conventional polymerization techniques are employed. In the Examples, ethylene is polymerized utilizing catalysts prepared from (1-11, 15-18) Al (C2H5)3, Ti(i-C3H7.O)4, Mg(OH)Cl/TiCl4, (12, 14) Al(i-C4H9)3, Ti(OC4H9)4, Mg(OH)Cl/TiCl4, (13) Al(C2H5)3, Ti(OC4H9)4, Mg(OH)Cl/TiCl4, and (19) In comparative examples, ethylene is polymerized using catalysts prepared from (R1) Mg(OH)Cl/TiCl4, Al(C2H5)3, (R2) TiCl4, Al(C2H5)3 and (R3 and R4) TiCl4, Ti(i-C3H7)4, Al(C2H5)3.
