    Abstract: In a text simplification system, a method for replacing text in a field of view of a user, comprises receiving eye movement data from an eye-tracking device, the eye movement data relating to text provided in a field of view of a user and detecting a cognitive load associated with the eye movement and corresponding to a visual location of the field of view of the user. The method comprises, when the cognitive load meets a cognitive load threshold, identifying visualized text provided in the visual location of the field of view of the user and identifying personalization information associated with the user. The method comprises, when the personalization information meets a personalization information criterion, replacing the visualized text provided in the visual location of the field of view of the user with simplified text.

    Abstract: A petroleum refining method for upgrading petroleum products improves the efficiency and reduces the costs of upgrading oils, such as lipids, bitumen, crude oil, fracking oils, synthetic oils, and other feeds, to produce useful fuels and chemical precursor streams. Usage of a specific type of zeolite (ZSM-5) catalyst, supercritical water to control coke formation, and a specific response to phase behavior and other catalytic effects optimize the process. A prescribed set of reactor conditions employing supercritical water increases activity of the catalyst in industrial reactions.

    Abstract: A thermal storage composition is defined by a polymer having thermally responsive absorption or passage capabilities based on an Upper Critical Solution Temperature (UCST) or Lower Critical Solution Temperature (LCST), and a sorbent in fluidic communication with the polymer. A fluid such as water conveys thermal energy between the polymer and the sorbent based on an identified target temperature that acts as a thermostat for synergistic fluid release and transfer between the polymer and sorbent that stores and releases heat energy in a cyclic manner. The composition includes a synergistic integration of a sorbent and selectively hydrophilic polymer to alternately hydrate according to a target temperature based on the UCST of the water/sorbent combination.

    Abstract: A molten metal inclusion test apparatus includes a spectroscopic appliance for gathering data indicative of the contents of a quantity of molten metal. Laser induced emissions provide spectral data based on the elements present in the melt. Analysis of a series of samplings, or "shots" of laser induced emissions indicates a presence of elements above a background or expected level. These elements appear as spikes in a graphical rendering of the spectral data, defined by a wavelength of the detected element. Correlation of the elements detected in the same shot indicates a composition of the inclusion, typically a particle of an extraneous compound in the melt. Such spectral analysis provides immediate feedback about melt quality, allowing corrective measures to be taken prior to casting.

    Abstract: A switching device receives an output cable from a guitar. The output cable has a plurality of conductors corresponding to each of the pickups on the guitar, typically 2 or 3. A passthrough signal based on manually switched pickup selection corresponds to a main guitar output. A pickup buffer circuit on the guitar isolates the signal conductors from the selected passthrough signal, and also switches the pickup buffer circuit on and off to allow for backwards compatibility. A multi-conductor cable and jack simultaneously transmits the plurality of signals to the switching device. The switching device receives the multi-conductor cable. A combination circuit in the switching device combines the signals from the pickups and also delivers the individual pickup signals to a respective output jack. Each output jack simultaneously delivers the respective pickup or combined signal to a mixer, amplifier or other signal processing device for recording and/or further processing.

    Abstract: Cathode material from exhausted lithium ion batteries are dissolved in a solution for extracting the useful elements Co (cobalt), Ni (nickel), Al (Aluminum) and Mn (manganese) to produce active cathode materials for new batteries. The solution includes compounds of valuable charge materials such as cobalt, nickel, aluminum and manganese dissolved as compounds from the exhausted cathode material of spent cells. However, LiFePO 4 is a waste stream charge material often discarded due to infeasibility of recycling. LiFePO 4 is precipitated as FePO 4 and remains as a by-product, along with graphite and carbon, which are not dissolved into the solution. FePO 4 can be separated from graphite and carbon, FePO 4 can be used to synthesize LiFePO 4 as cathode materials and graphite can be regenerated as anode materials.

    Abstract: A vanadium recovery approach utilizes oil fly ash (OFA), in contrast to coal fly ash, for separation and recovery of vanadium. OFA is first carbon burned to reduce the volume for recycling, and also to provide a fuel for other industrial processes. Following an almost 90% weight reduction from carbon burning, the remaining material includes about 18% vanadium. A salt roasting performed at the same temperature (about 650° C) as the carbon burning allows use of the same oven or furnace, reducing heat requirements for the overall process. Salt roasting generates a water-soluble material from which a water leaching process yields a vanadium leach solution containing recovered vanadium, avoiding a need for caustic or volatile leaching agents. Ammonium metavanadate is precipitated from the vanadium leach solution through addition of ammonium sulfate, and a calcination process used to generate vanadium oxide (V 2 O 5 ).

    Abstract: The present invention relates to devices and methods for measuring vascular deficiency using Doppler ultrasound detection. Embodiments can be used to monitor the condition of surgical tissue flaps or other conditions in which obstruction in the vascular system can impact patient health. The systems can include a Doppler ultrasound probe, a color probe, a temperature probe, and/or other suitable probes to measure blood volume and perfusion status of a tissue region. The systems and methods can be used to monitor flaps after flap transplant surgeries. The systems and methods can automatedly assess tissue condition and alert the patient or medical staff if the condition has fallen below a threshold indicating occlusion of a blood vessel. One or more additional sensors can be integrated into a probe to measure vascular conditions and a metric can be computed based on sensed data.
