Abstract: PURPOSE: A bidirectional optical transmission/reception module and a driving method thereof are provided to transmit and receive simultaneously optical signals by using a strand of optical fiber. CONSTITUTION: A 1.3 micrometer DBR LD(310) includes an active layer for generating light of a 1.3-micrometer band and a DBR mirror adjacent to the active layer. A monitoring PD(320) has an energy band to absorb the light of the 1.3-micrometer band and transmit the light of 1.55 micrometer. An optical signal detection PD(330) has an energy band to absorb the light of 1.55 micrometer. A plurality of insulating regions(345,346) are used for separating electrically the 1.3 micrometers DBR LD, the monitoring PD, and the optical signal detection PD. A plurality of p-electrodes are formed at the 1.3 micrometer DBR LD, the monitoring PD, and the optical signal detection PD, respectively. An n-electrode is used as a common electrode.
