Abstract:
A closed-loop wastewater treatment system subjects untreated wastewater to a series of treatment processes until a desired water quality is achieved. During primary treatment, total suspended solids, heavy metals and inorganic compounds are removed. Biodegradable components are thereafter removed by subjecting the wastewater to a secondary treatment. Non-biodegradable components are removed from the wastewater during tertiary treatment thereof. The closed-loop treatment system produces a high quality water comparable to, or in many cases better than, commercially available potable water.
Abstract:
A multi-disc brake (80) includes a piston housing (102) and attached torque tue (94) located about an axle (87). Integrated within the piston housing (102) is a brake actuator (90). The piston housing (102) is located axially between an actuator member (98) of the brake actuator (90) and an axle sleeve (109) and radial portion (87a) of the axle (87). Hydraulic actuation of the brake actuator (90) displaces axially the actuator member (98) against a stationary thrust sleeve (99) such that the piston housing (102) is compressed between the actuator member (98) and axle sleeve (109), thereby reducing torsional vibrational movement of the piston housing (102) and torque tube (94) about the axle (87).
Abstract:
A magnet brake is disclosed. The magnet brake may consist of a stationary magnet (26) assembly and a rotating magnet assembly (22). The opposing poles on the magnet assemblies have a mutual attraction that biases the assemblies into alignment with each other. The magnet brake may also be combined with Hall-effect switches to provide position and direction detection.
Abstract:
Constraining bands of high strength and low weight used for resistant containers able to receive explosive articles such as bombs and grenades and to minimize damage in the event of an explosion. These bands comprise at least one network of fiber having a tenacity of at least about 10 g/d and a tensile modulus of at least 200 g/d, at least about 50 weight percent of said fiber being placed along the length of said band, said bands being interrupted across the length thereof to create two ends, each of said ends comprising at least one integral loop. Application to protection of aircrafts in flight.
Abstract:
A polyamide homopolymer or copolymer film which is coated with a transparent aqueous dispersion of a polyurethane and cross-linker, with subsequent cross-linking of the urethane. The coated film is preferably uniaxially or biaxially stretched. The resulting coated film has improved adhesion to biologically derived glues which find use in packaging and laminated articles such as paperboard structures which are then shaped into boxes for consumer use.
Abstract:
This invention provides a process for producing cyanocinnamamides. More particularly, the invention provides a process for condensing a cyanoacetamide with a carbonyl-containing compound to produce cyanocinnamamides in good yield.
Abstract:
The present invention provides an annular sealing apparatus (10) for disposition in cooperation with a body defining a bore (12) and a rotating member (15) rotatably received in said bore (12) to inhibit fluid leakage therebetween. The sealing apparatus (10) is comprised of axially juxtaposed first and second (20) comb-like pluralities of uniformly spaced and integral finger members (36) circumscribing the rotating member (15). Each finger member (36) has substantially the same width and is separated from adjacent finger members by a uniform gap (38). At the innermost end of each finger (36) is a foot portion (44) sealingly and movably engaging said rotating member (15). Each foot portion (44) is configured so as to lift away from the rotating member (15) and ride on a thin film of air during engine operation. The first and second comb-like members (29) are positioned so that the fingers of each block the gaps (38) in the other.
Abstract:
An amorphous alloy strip having a sheet thickness ranging from about 50 to 75 mu m and a sheet width of at least 20 mm is produced by a casting process utilizing a single nozzle orifice and a high thermal conductivity, large diameter wheel as a casting substrate. The strip has a fracture strain of 0.01 or more, a lamination factor of 0.8 or more, and a core loss of less than 0.2 W/kg at 60 Hz and 1.4T.
Abstract:
A process for the preparation of 1,1,1,3,3-pentachloropropane (HCC-240fa). HCC-240fa is prepared by the photochlorination of 1,1,13-tetrachloropropane (HCC-250). HCC-240fa is an important intermediate in the preparation of 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoropropane (HFC-245fa), an HFC blowing agent which is not destructive to the ozone layer.
Abstract:
An oil filter (10) includes a colloidal suspension (12) of PTFE particles less than 2 microns in size retained by capillary forces within the intricacies of the filter media (26) until the filter (10) is installed and engine oil flows at first engine start up following installation. The PTFE colloidal suspension (12) is completely and immediately released into the engine lubricating system when oil flow is initiated. The PTFE colloidal suspension (12) is introduced into the oil filter (10) as one of the last manufacturing steps. Oil filter (10) is disposed vertically with its outlet port (14) at the top. A quantity of the PTFE colloidal suspension is introduced into the outlet port (14) to initially fill a portion of the volume defined by a centertube (18) and a retainer (16). The PTFE colloidal suspension passes through openings (20, 24) into contact with filter media (26). The capillary forces acting between filter media (26) and the PTFE colloidal suspension (12) cause the colloidal suspension (12) to be drawn in and retained within the intricacies of the filter media (26) fibers.
