    Abstract: The process comprises reacting 2-, 3- or 4-pentenenitrile or mixtures thereof with carbon monoxide and a hydroxyl compound in the presence of a catalyst system comprising (i) a palladium(II) compound, (ii) a bidentate diphosphine ligand and (iii) an anion source. Novel catalyst systems containing diphosphine ligands of the bis(phosphinomethyl)amine type are also described.

    Abstract: Water soluble transition metal complexes suitable as active constituents of the catalyst system for the preparation of linear, alternating carbon monoxide alpha -olefin copolymers in aqueous medium are new. Water soluble transition metal complexes, of formula (I), suitable as active constituents of the catalyst system for the preparation of linear, alternating carbon monoxide alpha -olefin copolymers in aqueous medium are new. G = (CRb2)r-, (-CRb2)s-Si(Ra)2-(CRb2)t- A'-O-B'-, or A'-Z(R )-B'-, R = H, 1-28C alkyl, 3-14C cycloalkyl, 6-15C aryl, or alkylaryl with 1-20C in alkyl and 6-15C in aryl part optionally substituted with group IVA, VA, VIA, or VIIA elements, N(Rb)2, -Si(Rc)3, or a residue of formula (II): A', B', -(CRb2)r-(CRb2)s-Si(Ra)2-(CRb2)t, -N(Rb)- = an r', s-, or t-atom constituent of a ring system, or together with Z = an (r+1) or (t+1) constituent of a heterocyclic ring, Ra = 1-20C alkyl, 3-10C cycloalkyl, 6-15C aryl, or alkylaryl with 1-10C in the alkyl and 6-15C in the aryl part; Rb = Ra, H or Si(Rc)3; Rc = 1-20C alkyl, 3-10C cycloalkyl, 6-15C aryl or alkylaryl with 1-10C in the alkyl and 6-15C in the aryl part; r = 1-4; r' = 1 or 2; s, t = 0,1, or 2 where 1 , E = a group VA nonmetallic element; R -R = 2-28C alkyl, 3-14C cycloalkyl, or alkylaryl with 1-28C in alkyl and 6-15C in aryl part or at least one polar proton active or ionic functional group based on group IVA to VIA nonmetallic elements substituted by at least one polar proton active or ionic functional group based on group IVA to VIA nonmetallic elements. L ,L = formally charged or neutral ligands, X = a mono- or multivalent anion; p = 0-4; m, n = 0-4, where p = mn; q = 0-20. Independent claims are included for: (1) Water soluble chelate ligands, of formula (III) (R )(R )E -G-E (R )(R ) (III) E , E = phosphorus and a nonmetallic group VA element, R -R = W = (linear, branched, or carbocyclene containing 2-28C alkyl or 3-14C cycloalkyl, with at least one terminal or internal OH-, amino-, carboxylic acid-, phosphoric acid-, ammonium-, or sulfonic acid group available, or alkylaryl with a 1-20C alkyl and 6-15C aryl part, where the alkyl or aryl part is substituted with at least one OH-, carboxylic acid-, amino acid-, phosphoric acid-, ammonium-, or sulfonic acid group) G = As above. (2) a process for preparation of a water soluble chelate ligand in which: (a) a compound of formula (IIIa): L-(CRb2)r-L or L-(CRb2)r-N(R )-(CRb2)-L Rb = H, 1-10C alkyl or 6-10C aryl, r = 1-4; R = W; and L = Cl, Br, or I is converted by an Arbuzov reaction with trialkoxyphosphines into compounds (IIIb) in which: L = P(OR )3, and R = 1-6C alkyl, 6-10C aryl, or alkylaryl, with a 1-6C alkyl and a 6-20C aryl part, (b) compound (IIIb) is reduced to a compound (IIIc) in which L = H, and (c) the compound of formula (IIIc) is subjected to radical polymerization in the presence of at least four equivalents of an olefinic unsaturated compound, which contains at least one polar proton active ionic functional group based on nonmetallic group IVA-VIA elements.
