PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily produce a cyclic anhydride of hydantoin or amino acid useful as an intermediate for the production of an essential amino acid such as methionine by reacting an aldehyde with urea, etc., and CO in the presence of a transition metal catalyst. SOLUTION: The objective compound of formula II is produced by reacting an aldehyde of formula R-CHO [R is a (substituted)alkyl or a (substituted)aryl] with CO and a compound of formula I [R2 is NH2 or the like; R3 is H, a (substituted)alkyl, a (substituted)aryl or the like] in the presence of a transition metal catalyst (e.g. Fe or Pd). The catalyst is preferably a mixture of a palladium compound (e.g. PdBr2), an ionic compound (e.g. phosphonium bromide) and an acid (e.g. sulfuric acid). The reaction is carried out preferably by using a solvent such as N-methylpyrrolidone under a pressure of 0.1-200 bar. This synthetic process does not form a by-produced salt to be disposed.

According to the inventive method for producing aldehydes, at least one compound with a vinyl or vinylidene group is reacted with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a source of a metal of subgroup VIII and a bidentate diphosphine ligand, said bidentate diphosphine ligand being of general formula (I), wherein (A), together with the phosphorus atom to which it is bonded, forms a 2-phospha-tricyclo [3.3.1.1.{3,7}] decyl radical, respectively, in which one or more non-adjacent carbon atoms are optionally replaced by oxygen atoms and which is optionally substituted, and wherein X represents a bridging chain with 1 to 10 atoms and the molar ratio of diphosphine-ligand to metal is at least 5. The method produces predominantly n-aldehydes.

The invention relates to a method for producing cyanovaleric acid or esters thereof by reacting 2-, 3- or 4-pentene nitrile or mixtures thereof with carbon monoxide and with a compound containing hydroxyl groups in the presence of a catalyst system. Said catalyst system comprises: (i) a palladium (II) compound, (ii) a bidentate diphosphine ligand and (iii) an anion source. The invention also relates to novel catalyst systems with diphosphine ligands of the bis(phosphinomethyl)amine type.
