    Abstract: Heat-expandable styrene polymers or copolymers are made by treating the polymers in finely-grained form, in a closed vessel, with a mixture of a major proportion of water and a minor proportion of a volatile aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon which is liquid at room temperature at a raised temperature which is below the softening point of the polymer. Specified copolymerizable monomers are acrylonitrile, n-butyl acrylate, N-vinylcarbazole, N-vinylimidazole, N-vinylcaprolactam, vinyl methyl or vinyl isopropyl ketone, an alpha-methyl styrene, a terpolymer styreneacrylonitrile-N-vinylcarbazole being also specified, while a mixture of polystyrene, polyethylene and polyvinyl isobutyl ether is also described. Specified hydrocarbons are pentane, hexane, heptane, petroleum ether, cyclopentane, and cyclohexane which may be diluted with methanol or ethanol or the monoethyl or monobutyl ethers of ethylene glycol. The products may be expanded by heating to above the boiling point of the raising agent and the softening point of the styrene polymer.
