Abstract: A bearing race retention device (10) for a ball or roller bearing assembly (16) mounted between a pair of relatively rotatable members (12, 14). An annular race (22) defines a smooth notchless cylindrical surface (24) and a preselected diametral slip fit clearance (37) with the first member (12) for ease of assembly, and an annular groove (48) of uniform and generally rectangular cross section is formed in the first member (12) and is defined generally by a cylindrical seat (50) and first and second side walls (52, 54). Advantageously, a swellable elastomeric ring (60) of unrestrained uniform circular cross section is compressibly disposed in the groove (48) during initial installation of the race (22) to a mean groove fill condition of at least 65% in volume, is constrained by the side walls (52, 54) spaced apart about 1 1/3 times the diameter of the elastomeric ring (60) and is of a thermoset material sufficient for volumetrically swelling upon exposure thereof to a petroleum-based lubricating fluid in the clearance (37) so that it substantially fills the groove (48) and frictionally holds the race (22) from rotating.

Abstract: A track joint (10) is provided with a controlled running clearance means of a controlled interstice producing membrane (60) placed between the opposing axial thrust surfaces (26, 28; 52, 58) of the joint (10). The membrane (60) is of a substance which sacrifically self-destructs upon the initial pivotal movements of the joint (10). Abstract: Anti-wheel spin control systems are useful, for example, in industrial off-road vehicles. It is desirable that such systems operate automatically and not be unduly influenced by false slip signals caused by steering of the vehicle. It is further desirable that the operability of the control be readily determined by the operator. The instant anti-spin control includes means (115) for producing a slip signal having a value responsive to the difference in rotational velocity between the vehicle wheels (100, 101), and means (127) for producing a test signal. A processor means (121) receives the slip signal and test signal, compares the slip signal value with a first predetermined reference value in response to receiving the slip signal in the absence of the test signal, and compares the slip signal value with a second predetermined reference value in response to receiving both the slip signal and the test signal. A brake control signal is produced in response to the slip signal value exceeding the compared reference value, and the braking mechanism (112, 114) corresponding to the slipping wheel (100, 101) is activated. In a second embodiment of the invention, a steer signal is also produced and applied to the processor means (121). The steer signal is utilized to negate the effect of steering the vehicles on the produced slip signal. Thus, the disclosed anti-spin system accounts for false slip indications produced by steering the vehicle, and provides a ready means for the operator to test the operability of the control system.

Abstract: Fuel injection apparatuses are used to inject fuel into the combustion chambers of compression ignition engines. The known mechanical drive arrangements for driving the distributor rotor and controlling beginning moment of fuel injection are complex, bulky and expensive to manufacture. The subject timing control for fuel injection apparatus includes a planetary gear arrangement (13) driven by a pumping section (11) and drivingly connected to a distributor rotor (36). A ring gear (49) controls the timing phase relationship between the rotor (36) and a delivery passage (32) communicating the pumping section (11) with the rotor (36). A riser (73) of a flyweight assembly (60) is mechanically connected to the ring gear (49) so that the ring gear is positioned in accordance with the engine speed. The planetary gear arrangement is of simple construction requiring a minimum of space and is relatively inexpensive to manufacture.

Abstract: A bypass restrictor arrangement is provided for use in a distribution valve (14) to control the rate of bypass flow thus effectively reducing cavitation in a fuel system at the end of the injection stroke. Others primarily rely on operation at low system pressure or they rely on a relief valve to maintain a predetermined pressure level in the bypass passage. In the subject arrangement, an orifice (70) is located in a bypass port (43) of a rotor (42) prior to the bypass fluid communicating with a low pressure chamber (64). Furthermore, the low pressure chamber (64) is maintained at a predetermined pressure level by a relief valve (83). This arrangement ensures that the rate of fuel flow during bypass is controlled while also flushing and/or controlling the size of any entrained air bubbles or voids thus increasing the efficiency of the fuel system.

Abstract: Fuel injection devices are used for injecting fuel into the combustion chambers of compression ignition engines. It is desirable to isolate the mechanical drive for fuel injection timing from the flow path of high pressure fuel to minimize the seepage of fuel into the fluid lubrificating the mechanical drive while using only one speed responsive device for both the timing and governing functions. The subject fuel injection apparatus (10) includes a planetary gear arrangement (13) having a ring gear (49) to change the timing phase relationship between a distributor rotor (36) and a delivery passage (32) which communicates the pump section (11) with the rotor. A metering collar (41) is adapted to meter the quantity of fuel delivered by the rotor (36) to the outlet ports (33). Both the ring gear (49) and the metering collar (41) are mechaniccally connected to an element (73) of a single flyweight assembly (60). The metering collar (41) is widely spaced from the planetary gear arrangement (13) to minimize the leakage of fuel into the lubrificating fluid.

Abstract: A nitriding grade alloy steel includes aluminum in a range of 0.07% to 0.30% by weight and vanadium in a range of 0.03% to 0.20% by weight. Prior art nitriding grade alloy steel generally have relied on molybdenum, nickel and other expensive alloy additions to provide nitridability and core hardness. The present invention includes only essential amounts of carbon, manganese, and chromium, in addition to small, controlled amounts of aluminum and vanadium. The present invention is not only economical to produce due to the absence of significant amounts of costly alloying elements, but also has a unique combination of hardenability, resistance to loss of hardness during tempering, and excellent nitride response. Articles manufactured from the new alloy steel are desirably hardened, tempered, machined and nitrided, and are useful in applications requiring high wear resistance and high stress loading. Such articles include gears, shafts, bushings, couplings and other such articles subjected to severe service applications.

Abstract: In the operator's station of a vehicle, it has been common practice to mount the steering wheel (22) and the control levers (24) needed to manipulate the vehicle on an adjustable control console (10). The control console (10) may then be moved fore and aft to accommodate the individual operators that may operate the vehicle to enhance their confort. Mechanical latching mechanisms have been used that provide only a selected number of positions to which the control console may be placed, and are often rather cumbersome. Hydraulic cylinders have also been incorporated into an adjustable control console design to provide an unlimited number of positions that the control console may assume. These designs, however, are quite complex, involving a plurality of hydraulic cylinders and extensive valving componentry. The present invention overcomes these problems by providing an actuating means (64) that is positioned about one of the pivot shafts (44) that is utilized in the pivotal mounting of the control console (10) to the vehicle frame (12). The actuating means (64) serves as a mounting member (88) for a position locking device and allows the control console (10) to be locked in a position anywhere between its maximum travel limits. A centering mechanism (134) is also mounted about the same pivot shaft (44) to maintain the actuating means (64) in a preselected position. With the actuating means (64) and the centering mechanism (134) mounted about the pivot shaft (44) the entire mechanism remains very effective and compact in structure.
