Abstract: The invention disclosed is an optical fiber which includes a central core glass region with a first refractive index profile. The fiber includes a second core glass region adjacent to and surrounding said central region, said second region having a thickness that varies along an axial direction of said second region and having a second refractive index profile that differs from said first profile. Additionally, the invention includes an optical fiber preform that can be drawn into the above fiber. The invention also includes the method of making the above describe optical fiber. Furthermore, the invention may also be practiced to make an optical fiber preform in accordance with the aforementioned invention. The aforementioned fiber and preform is particularly useful as a dispersion managed fiber or dispersion managed preform respectively.

Abstract: A cylindrical glass body having a low water content centerline region and method of manufacturing such a cylindrical glass body for use in the manufacture of optical waveguide fiber is disclosed. The centerline region of the cylindrical glass body has a water content sufficiently low such that an optical waveguide fiber made from the cylindrical glass body of the present invention exhibits an optical attenuation of less than about 0.35 dB/km, and preferably less than about 0.31 dB/km at a measured wavelength of 1380 nm. A low water content plug used in the manufacture of such a cylindrical glass body, an optical waveguide fiber having a low water peak, and an optical fiber communication system incorporating such an optical waveguide fiber is also disclosed.

Abstract: A pulse-reshaping optical fiber having a core with refractive index nc surrounded by a cladding layer, the diameter of the core changing monotonically along the length of the fiber. The core includes a central region having a maximum refractive index n1 and a moat region disposed radially adjacent to the central region. The moat region has a minimum refractive index n2 which is sufficiently low that the index delta .DELTA.2 of the moat region with respect to nc is not greater than 0.1 %. The moat regio n affects the change in dispersion with respect to fiber cladding diameter, as well as providing the pulse-reshaping fiber with low dispersion versus wavelength slope. The pulse-reshaping fiber is particularly useful in association with optical transmission systems where high transmission rates and narrow pulse widths are desired, including components such as high pulse rate wavelentgh-division-multiplexers (WDMs) and optical regenerators.

Abstract: Disclosed is a single mode optical waveguide fiber designated for compensating for positive dispersion in optical telecommunications systems. A key characteristic of the invention is that the novel dispersion compensating waveguide, viz., a waveguide having large negative dispersion, contains no dopants, such as fluorine, which lower the refractive index of silica. A refractive index profile design which includes a high refractive index center segment (5) surrounded by a plurality of alternating high (6, 10, 13) and low refractive index segments, provides a dispersion compensation fiber which has the optical properties required for the system to be compensated without sacrificing bend resistance, increasing splicing loss, or elevating polarization mode dispersion.

Abstract: Disclosed is a single mode optical waveguide fiber having a segmented core design. The core may have two or more segments. The highest refractive index portion of the core is spaced apart from the centerline of the waveguide fiber. The relative index of the first or center segment of the core is negative, where the reference refractive index is taken to be the minimum index clad. This family of core profiles provides effective areas in the range of 110 mum2 to 150 mum2 in the operating window around 1550 nm.

Abstract: A method of making a segmented core optical waveguide preform for making fiber that is resistant to attenuation increases due to hydrogen and heat aging. A first core region comprising a silica glass rod containing at least a first dopant such as fluorine is inserted into a central opening of a second core region comprising silica soot containing a second dopant such as germanium. The first core region and second core region are consolidated together to form a segmented core region and cladding is deposited on the outer surface of the segmented core region. The second core region having the central opening is made by depositing silica soot containing the second dopant and removing the mandrel.
