Abstract: A 1-6 carbon (C) peroxycarboxylic acid is used as disinfectant in a process for treating swimming pool water by filtration through a filter bed and chlorination, in which the filter is back-flushed periodically with water, to which disinfectant is added before or in the filter, and the spent flushing water is discharged.

Abstract: The process according to the invention prevents the transfer of harmful organisms of zooplankton, including the epifauna thereof, and of phytoplankton including the resting stages thereof, which are taken up with the ballast water of ships at one location and discharged in another. According to the invention, the organisms are substantially destroyed by the addition of an agent containing a water-soluble percarboxylic acid with 1 to 6 carbon atoms, particularly an aqueous solution containing peracetic acid and/or performic acid and hydrogen peroxide, in a quantity of 0.1 to 200 mg of percarboxylic acid per litre of ballast water, to the ballast water and allowing it to react before discharge. According to a preferred embodiment, a cyanide is added to the ballast water in addition to the percarboxylic acid.

Abstract: PCT No. PCT/EP96/03485 Sec. 371 Date May 29, 1998 Sec. 102(e) Date May 29, 1998 PCT Filed Aug. 7, 1996 PCT Pub. No. WO97/08100 PCT Pub. Date Mar. 6, 1997Owing to the concomitant storage, transport, material and handling problems and the unsatisfactory retarding of reinfection, the use of commercially available peracetic acid solutions with a high peracetic acid (PES) and acetic acid content for disinfecting large quantities of aqueous solutions, e.g. purification plant outlets, has been closely limited. It is possible to disinfect even large quantities of aqueous solutions economically and at the same time retard reinfection by using a peracetic acid solution containing 1.5 to 2.5 wt. % peracetic acid and 40 to 60 wt. % hydrogen peroxide and under 2 wt. % acetic acid as a disinfectant. The use of a peracetic acid solution with less than 1 wt. % acetic acid is preferred.

Abstract: The control of plant pathogenic microorganisms, especially Fusarium, in the drainage water of the water circuit of a plant installation, especially green house, treated with an aqueous peroxycarboxylic acid solution containing hydrogen peroxide, comprises reducing peroxycarboxylic acid and hydrogen peroxide by contacting the water containing peroxycarboxylic acid solution with a solid decomposition-catalyst for active oxygen components.

Abstract: Process for the preparation of a cationic starch having a controlled viscosity, in which, in one process step, the starch is homogenised in the presence of 10 to 35 % by weight of water and preferably 0.01 to 2.00 % by weight of a finely divided silica and/or silicate (based in each case on the total amount of the mixture) with an alkaline oxide, hydroxide, silicate or aluminate or a mixture thereof, an alkylene epoxide and a peroxy compound or a mixture of at least two peroxy compounds, and is then boiled down at the desired time.
