Abstract: Pulverous substituted natural polymers of formula Polymer-A-CH2-CH(OH)-(CH2)n-X (I) having a degree of substitution (DS) below 0.32, in which the polymer component has not been pregelatinised and which is bonded to aminoalcohol compounds via an ether or imino group, are claimed. X = NR1R2 or NR1R2R3 X ; n = 1-3; R1, R2 and R3 = 1-20C alkyl; or R1 = benzyl; A = O or NH; X = chloride, bromide, sulphate, nitrate or acetate, especially chloride. The pulverous polymers also conveniently contain 0.02-2 wt.% finely divided, hydrophobic or hydrophilic silicic acid.

Abstract: Process for the preparation of a cationic starch having a controlled viscosity, in which, in one process step, the starch is homogenised in the presence of 10 to 35 % by weight of water and preferably 0.01 to 2.00 % by weight of a finely divided silica and/or silicate (based in each case on the total amount of the mixture) with an alkaline oxide, hydroxide, silicate or aluminate or a mixture thereof, an alkylene epoxide and a peroxy compound or a mixture of at least two peroxy compounds, and is then boiled down at the desired time.
