    Abstract: A supported catalyst comprising palladium and/or its compounds and alkali compounds, optionally with gold, barium and/or cadmium as the catalytically active components or a support (molded article) is characterized in that the catalyst is applied to a support having a through channel and the active components have a penetration depth of 0.5-1.5 mm measured from the surface of the support material. A supported catalyst (I) comprising palladium and/or its compounds and alkali compounds, as well as additionally gold and/or its compounds (system Pd/alkali/Au) or cadmium and/or its compounds (system Pd/alkali/Cd) or barium and/or its compounds (system Pd/alkali/Ba) or palladium, alkali compounds, and mixtures of gold and/or cadmium and/or barium as the catalytically active components or a support (molded article) is characterized in that the catalyst is applied to a support having a through channel and the active components have a penetration depth of 0.5-1.5 mm measured from the surface of the support material. Independent claims are included for: (i) a process for the production of the supported catalyst (I) by dipping, spraying, evaporating, soaking or precipitation of Pd-, Au-, Cd-, Ba-metal compounds, optionally reduction of the deposited metal compounds, optionally reduction of the deposited metal compounds, washing to remove chloride constituents and impregnation with alkali acetates or alkali compounds that are at least partially converted to alkali acetates under the reaction conditions for the production of vinyl acetate monomer; (ii) a molded article having a ring-like cylindrical state whose cross-section has a hollow cavity and having a free surface area of 1.6-77 % of the total surface area.

    Abstract: Moldings based on silica having a hollow cylindrical configuration with internal reinforcing stays or spokes leading from an inner wall of a hollow cylinder to the center of the molding or in the form of miniliths having passageway channels therethrough, are produced by homogenizing silica with methyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, wax and/or polyethylene glycol. Water and optionally aqueous alkaline ammonia solution are added, and the mixture is subjected to kneading and forming, extruding, optionally cutting the extrudate to the desired length by means of a cutting device, drying at a temperature from 20 to 150° C., and annealing for a period from 30 minutes to 10 hours at a temperature of 400 to 1200° C. The moldings can be used as catalyst supports for the production of unsaturated esters from olefins, organic acids and oxygen in the gas phase and and can be used in particular for the production of vinyl acetate monomer.

    Abstract: A silicon dioxide molded article (I) is characterized as being in the form of a hollow cylinder having internal reinforcing stays or spokes extending from the inner wall of the cylinder at the center of the article or contains a number of through channels. Independent claims are included for: (a) a process for the production of (I) by kneading and forming and/or extruding the article, optionally cutting to length, drying at 10-150 deg C and heating at 400-1,200 deg C for 30 minutes to 10 hours; (b) a supported catalyst for the production of vinyl acetate monomer comprising (I) and a catalyst component comprising palladium and/or compounds and alkali compounds, optionally with gold (Pd/Alkali/Au), cadmium (Pd/Alkali/Cd) and/or barium (Pd/Alkali/Ba); and (c) a process for the production of the supported catalyst by impregnation, spraying, evaporation, dipping or precipitation of Pd, Au, Cd and/or Ba compounds onto (I) with optionally reduction of the reducible metal compounds, optionally washing of the chloride components, impregnation with alkali acetates or alkali compounds.

    Abstract: A pressed article (I) is based upon pyrogenically produced silicon dioxide having a pore volume of 0.5-1.8 ml/g. Independent claims are included for: (i) the production of (I) by mixing pyrogenically produced silicon dioxide with methylhydroxyethylcellulose, wax and polyethylene glycol and water followed by extrusion, optionally cutting the extrudate to a desired length, drying at 70-150 degrees C and heating at 400-1200 degrees C for up to 10 hours; (ii) a supported catalyst (II) comprising (I) for the production of vinylacetate monomer, that contains palladium (Pd) and/or Pd compounds and alkali compounds; gold (Au) and/or Au compound (Pd/alkali/Au system) or cadmium (Cd) and/or Cd compounds (Pd/alkali/Cd system) or barium (Ba) and/or Ba compounds (Pd/alkali/Ba system) or Pd, alkali compounds and mixture of Au and/or Cd and/or Ba; and (iii) the production of the catalyst support (II) by soaking, spraying, condensing, dipping or precipitating the Pd, Au, Cd and/or Ba compounds onto (I), optionally reducing the metal, washing to remove the resulting chloride content, impregnating with alkali acetate or alkali compound that is converted under reaction conditions at least partially to alkali acetate.
