Abstract: A time division multiple access communication system is disclosed, in which down link data are transmitted over a data channel in repeated time frames each containing a plurality of time slots. Down link set up information is transmitted over a control channel to indicate from which time slot a user terminal should extract data. Each frame on the data channel includes a user packet flag to indicate whether or not each time slot in the frame contains data. Each user terminal is responsive to the set up information and to the user packet flags to extract data from its assigned time slot in those frames which the slot is indicated to contain data.

Abstract: The invention relates to mobile cellular communication systems in which asymmetric access to a time division duplex (TDD) communication channel is provided. The channel is divided (by TDD) into slots which are allocated to either uplink communication or downlink communication by the base station in each cell. Timing of slots, and thus of compulsory uplink and downlink slots, is coordinated across the cells of a system.

Abstract: In the method provided, test transmissions between the mobile user terminal and base station antennas are made, and the received test transmissions processed to determine respective signal path quality for each of the base station antennas. Upon the determined signal path quality exceeding a first predetermined threshold, but being less than a second predetermined threshold higher than the first predetermined threshold, the mobile user terminal is connected to the corresponding base station antenna by control channels but not data channels so as to be time synchronised. Upon the determined signal path quality exceeding the second predetermined threshold, the mobile user terminal is connected to the corresponding base station antenna by both control channels and data channels so as to be call connected.

Abstract: A radio telecommunications network comprises a transmitter (2) and a receiver (4). For each cell (18,22) delay due to transfer of representation of the received data frame across interfaces between the nodes along a transfer path to node (14) is estimated by determining contribution to the delay caused by each interface along transfer path.
