Abstract: To control the molecular weight of a propylene homo- or co-polymer at a constant level when subjecting propylene alone, or together with another alpha -olefin, to bulk polymerization in the presence of hydrogen as a molecular weight modifier, the polymerization is performed in a reaction tank equipped with a reflux condenser, using liquid monomer as the reaction medium. The molecular weight is controlled at a desired level, by constantly measuring the quantity of heat removed from the reaction tank and constantly calculating the volume of hydrogen to be consumed, on the basis of the above-measured quantity of removed heat and the volume (X) of hydrogen consumed per unit amount of polypropylene, which volume (X) is obtained by utilizing the relation In eta =InX+A. (A being a constant and eta being the intrinsic viscosity of the propylene polymer). Hydrogen is charged into the reaction tank in quantities corresponding to variations in the calculated quantity.

Abstract: A block copolymer of propylene is obtained with its quality kept uniform by first conducting continuous polymerization of propylene in a polymerization system (A, B), discharging a polymer slurry continuously from the polymerization system (A, B) into a batchwise polymerization tank (C, or C 2 ), and by feeding ethylene to the tank for conducting batchwise polymerization therein of ethylene and propylene. Subsequently, a copolymer slurry formed by the preceding batchwise polymerization is discharged, leaving at least a predetermined amount of unreacted ethylene in the tank (C 1 or C 2 ). Into the tank with the unreacted ethylene still left therein, are simultaneously charged polymer slurry from the polymerization system (A, B) and a deactivator, without supplying ethylene, and the deactivator charging rate is controlled in such a way that the partial pressure of ethylene in the vapor phase of the tank always reaches a predetermined value at the time point of completion of reception of the polymer slurry therein. After batch polymerization, a polymer slurry is fed to a flash tank (E) which functions to provide the block copolymer in powder form for collection in a receiver (F).

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method for controlling the polymerization temperature in a polymerization apparatus equipped with a cooling system in which steam, which has occurred in the presence of a volatile liquid medium in a reaction system, is condensed in a reflux condenser and the resulting noncondensable gas and condensate are then returned to the reaction system, thereby removing the polymerization heat. A portion of the noncondensable gas is recirculated to the cooling system. The flow rate of the noncondensable gas to be recirculated and the flow rate of a cooling medium to be introduced into the reflux condenser are controlled in accordance with the temperature of the reaction system.

Abstract: A process is provided herein wherein a solid polymer slurry diluted with a specific diluent is continuously discharged under controlled conditions from a high pressure zone to a low pressure zone substantially maintained at atmospheric pressure and the slurry is then separated into said diluent and dried polymer, the improvement wherein the discharged amount of the solid polymer slurry is strictly controlled by varying the heat in the second zone and simultaneously adding a diluent which is gaseous under normal temperature and pressure so that by the control of these two perimeters a continuous slurry discharge can be maintained at predetermined levels.
