    Abstract: A method and apparatus for simulating signal interference in one communication channel within a communication system, such as cellular or wireless subscriber telephone and/or data systems. The communication system may be of a cellular type in which users from a plurality of cells communicate information signals between one another using at least one base station and code division multiple access (CDMA) spread spectrum type communication signals. The base station is included in a first of the cells and has a transmitter from which information is transmitted to subscriber units over at least one communication channel. The disclosed method includes the step of determining a first composite signal energy associated with signal transmission from the base station transmitter over a first set of simulated communication channels. The simulation method further contemplates estimating a first average data rate for the first composite signal energy. Signal power transmitted over the one communication channel is adjusted in accordance with a first interference signal which is based on the first composite signal energy and first average data rate. In a preferred implementation, a determination is also made of a second composite signal energy associated with signal transmissions from base station transmitters in other cells over a second set of simulated communication channels. An estimate is also made of a second average data rate for the second composite signal energy to enable generation of a second interference signal.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for use in a hybrid position location system. The method and apparatus combines measurements from Global Positioning System (GPS) and terrestrial transceiver stations to compute the location of a device. An algebraic solution to hybrid position location system equations i s output from the method and apparatus. The method and apparatus determines th e position of a device using a non-iterative method, as against the use of a conventional iterative least mean square method. The method of the present invention can be used to solve the location system equations in scenarios where a non-iterative solution is desirable. In certain scenarios, the location system equations may have two possible solutions. An iterative meth od would converge on one of the solutions, without any indication of the existence of the other ambiguous solution. Moreover, the iterative method ma y converge on the incorrect of the two ambiguous solutions. Use of the present ly disclosed method and apparatus yields both the ambiguous solutios. The disclosed method may be followed up with iterative methods, using the solutions from the algebraic method as initial estimates of the device location for the iterative method. A different process can then select the correct solution. Thus, the algebraic method can be used to detect the existence of ambiguous solutions, and to find both solutions.

    Abstract: An apparatus (402, 404) is provided for detecting link imbalances in a digital cellular communications system including a plurality of wireless units (400) and base stations. The apparatus (402, 404) determines if a link failure in a first radio link between a wireless unit (400) and a base station during call initialisation, whether the link failure is a reverse or forward link failure, whether the link failure is due to a link imbalance in the first radio link, and if so instructs the wireless unit (400) to switch to a second radio link. If the link failure is due to a weak reverse link, the apparatus (402, 404) determines the maximum number of access probes. If the wireless unit (400) has transmitted the maximum number of probes, then communication is initiated on a secondary communication system, or an idle state is entered and communication reinitiated with a primary digital cellular communication system.

    Abstract: A system and method for determining a position of a mobile wireless transceiver. A Doppler shift of signals transmitted from first and second satellites, respectively, relative to a base station is calculated. A first set of pseudo ranges of the first and second satellites, respectively, relative to the base station is also calculated. Satellite identification information, Doppler shift information, and the pseudo range information between the base station and the wireless transceiver is sent to wireless transceiver. The wireless transceiver use the information received from the base station to identify a second set of pseudo ranges between the wireless transceiver and the first and second satellites, respectively, at a time tx. The wireless transceiver sends the second set of pseudo ranges between the wireless transceiver and the first and second satellites, respectively, along with time information tx to the base station, in response to which, the base station calculate the position of the wireless transceiver.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for efficiently transmitting location assistance information to a mobile communication device over a control channel with a minimal impact on the capacity of the control channel. A position location server provides a difference between satellite locations which have been computed using Almanac data and then Ephemeris data. Sending only the difference between the locations and clock corrections computed using the tw o different data types, the total amount of information to be transmitted to a mobile communication device is significantly reduced. Furthermore, by providing rate of change information, the method and apparatus allows the location assistance information to remain valid for a relatively long time after it has been received by the mobile communication device.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for dynamically adjusting a power control loop that attempts to maintain either the transmit power of a signal sent from a base station to a mobile station or the signal to noise ratio of a signal sent fr om the mobile station (300) to the base station (400) above a minimum threshold and below a maximum threshold. Location information that is representative o f the distance and morphology between the mobile station (300) and the base station (400) and the velocity of the mobile station (300) are determined. T he minimum and the maximum thresholds of the power control loop are then adjust ed in accordance with the location and the mobility information such that the minimum and the maximum threshold vary as the distance and the morphology between the mobile station (300) and the base station (400) and the velocity of the mobile station (300) change. In addition, the step size used to increase or decrease the transmit signal power, is adjusted in accordance wi th the velocity of the mobile station (300). A transmitter sends the signal at a power level that is controlled by the power control loop with the adjusted minimum threshold.

    Abstract: Method and apparatus providing enhanced sensitivity for GPS receivers (400, 500, 600, 700) by allowing coherent integration of a correlation over several code periods of a GPS signal in one embodiment, and by performing a time to frequency domain conversion to the output from a correlation processor (507) in a second embodiment. In the case in which coherent integration is performed over several code periods, advantage is taken of the fact that CDMA cellular telephone base stations transmit information that allows the receiver to determine GPS time before beginning a GPS signal acquisition process. The integration can be expanded to include code periods from more than one bit period, if the GPS receiver (400, 500, 600, 700) takes advantage of the fact that known bit patterns are transmitted at particular times within the transmission from a GPS satellite. If no base station is within range, then the output from a correlator (507) that integrates a correlation over one code period is used to generate values that are input to a discrete time domain to frequency domain transform processor (511). The output from the transform processor (511) will indicate the presence of a signal from a particular satellite and the offset between locally generated signal and the received GPS signal.
