Abstract:
A method and apparatus for the production of napped surfaces that are textured lightly and irregularly. The surface of a substrate is coated with an adhesive and then covered with short textile fibers to form a layer of nap. After the adhesive hardens, the nap layer is subjected to mechanical deformation by permitting a plurality of balls made of a resilient material to bounce on the layer. The apparatus includes a panel of backing material support for the substrate, such as a panel of material which is to be treated and which already has a nap layer on its surface. Below the support is disposed a vibrator mechanism which causes the support together with the panel of material disposed thereon to vibrate. Above the support and the panel of material disposed thereon, there is a treatment chamber having lateral partitions and an impact ceiling. Within the treatment chamber there is a plurality of balls made of a resilient material.
Abstract:
A method for producing a flocked web by applying a layer of a thermosetting plastic foam onto a carrier sheet which foam penetrates into the surface of the carrier, flocking the uncrosslinked layer and then thermally hardening the layer and wherein prior to complete crosslinking of the flocked layer, the partially crosslinked flocked layer is submitted to heat pressing. In a preferred embodiment, the heat pressing can include an embossing step. The process of the present invention is not only easy to carry out, it avoids the presence of air bubbles as well as other inconsistancies in the product. The product obtained with the present invention is also disclosed.
Abstract:
A method for making an electrochemical cell electrode involves depositing a layer of dry carbon/hydrophobic polymer powder on the surface of a substrate by dispersing the powder as a cloud in a chamber over the substrate and pulling the powder onto the substrate by drawing a vacuum under the substrate. The electrode is subsequently compacted and sintered. Typically the carbon component of the powder is catalyzed, such as with platinum. Thus, the method is for applying a catalyst layer on an electrode substrate. The method is particularly adapted to the high speed manufacture of electrodes.

A process for producing a flocked fabric laminate by coating an auxiliary substrate with a temporary adhesive binder, flocking the coated auxiliary substrate with flock fibers, coating the flock fibers with a curable flock adhesive binder, marrying a substrate backing layer to the binder coated flock, permanently setting the flock adhesive binder, and then removing the auxiliary substrate from the fabric laminate whereby the flock remains secured to the substrate backing layer is disclosed. Flocked fabric laminates obtained by such method are also described.

A flocked weather strip for insertion into a T-shaped recess of a door or door frame for engagement with the other upon closing. The weather strip is comprised of a T-shaped member of plastic with flocking adhered to the end of the upright. The end of the upright is so shaped that the adhesive used does not flow onto the sides of the upright.
