    Abstract: An improvement in the conventional process for the production of caprolactam. The process involves: (a) reacting air with ammonia gas in an ammonia conversion zone to produce nitric oxide; (b) oxidizing a portion of the nitric oxide to nitrogen dioxide to produce an NOx-rich process gas stream; (c) reacting the NOx-rich stream with ammonium carbonate in a nitriting zone to produce ammonium nitrite; (d) reducing the ammonium nitrite to hydroxylamine diammonium sulfate; (e) hydrolyzing the hydroxylamine diammonium sulfate to hydroxylamine sulfate; (f) oximating the hydroxylamine sulfate with cyclohexanone to produce cyclohexanone oxime; and (g) converting the cyclohexanone oxime to caprolactam. The process is improved by adding supplemental oxygen downstream of the ammonia conversion zone to increase the quantity and rate of formation of nitrogen dioxide in the NOx-rich process gas stream.

    Abstract: A method for the preparation of omega lactams is disclosed, more particularly epsilon caprolactam or a precursor thereof (such as cyclohexanone oxime), using as the starting material a cyclomethylene ketene, with the simultaneous formation of side products such as cyclohexanecarboxylic acid, wherein an adduct is preliminarly formed between cyclomethylene ketene and sulphur dioxide. The adduct is then reacted with a nitrosating agent so as to obtain, under the appropriate reaction conditions, the expected lactam, more specifically epsilon caprolactam.

    Abstract: 1,189,182. Welding by fusion. AIR REDUCTION CO. Inc. 3 Aug., 1967 [12 Aug., 1966], No. 35769/67. Heading B3R. In consumable electrode arc-welding, the feed rate of the electrode is varied cyclically to achieve a pulsed arc-type welding. A power supply with a dropping, constant or rising characteristic may be used. The maximum feed rate of each cycle is such as to produce spray transfer. Metal transfer does not occur during the greater part of each cycle. Mild steel may be so welded with a shielding gas of 98% argon, 2% oxygen. The electrode may be fed by a programmed automatically controlled variablespeed motor. In one modification, the electrode 30, Fig. 6, is fed by a motor-driven eccentric feed roll 40 which co-operates with a spring- loaded idler roll. In another modification, the variation in feed rate is achieved by laterally oscillating a flexible guide tube 66, Fig. 7, for the electrode 30 by a double acting pneumatic cylinder 68.
