Abstract: Apparatus for sensing overheated electrical insulation through the detection of thermoparticulates in a dynamoelectric machine's cooling gas system is disclosed. The cooling gas as it circulates will entrain thermoparticulates produced in the system when there is overheating. This gaseous carrier is then withdrawn and conducted to an ionization chamber where it is ionized. Downstream from the ionization chamber there is placed a first ion collector for collecting ions with relatively small radii. A second ion collector which is biased for collecting ions with relatively large radii is also placed downstream from the ionization chamber. By comparison of ion current from the first ion collector with ion current from the second ion collector it is possible to detect the presence of thermoparticulates in the cooling gas relatively independent of gas pressure, flow rate through the monitor, and effectiveness of the radiation source.

Abstract: An ionization detecting fire alarm device that comprises a double chamber structure, a source disposed in at least one of the chambers and a vernier adjusting screw electrode protruding into one chamber. The chamber containing the adjustable electrode is more open to the atmosphere than the other chamber. Porting is provided between chambers and detection occurs by sensing the rate of change of ionization current in the chamber structure. The source or sources, one being in each chamber, is a beta source such as a nickel 63 source. A change in ionization current is detected by a unique circuit of this invention which comprises a programmable unijunction transistor oscillator circuit.

Abstract: Two ionisation chambers are connected in series electrically to detect smoke, gas or aerosols. This method overcomes disadvantages such as difficulties in adjusting sensitivity and the need for high voltages. Causes of certain phantom alarm signals are eliminated. A reference (1) and analysis (2) ionisation chambers are separated by a conducting membrane (3) fixed onto an epoxy glass and fixed to a base by silicon joints (4). The membrane supports a radioactive source (5) and forms a common electrode for the two chambers. Discs (6, 7) form the other two electrodes and one (6) is connected to a printed circuit (8) forming a Faraday screen (14) by a shaft (9) which permits adjustment. An orifice (10) connects the reference and analysis chambers to attenuate slow changes of environmental pollution. The common electrode potential increases with increasing gas content and is connected to an FET in a detector circuit.

Abstract: The detector comprises cylindrical reference and measurement cells arranged coaxially with a central separating/support block of PTFE. The measurement cell is enclosed with conducting wire mesh (electrode) cylinder and the reference cell is enclosed in a conducting metal sleeve. The outer end of the wire mesh is closed by a PTFE plate, as is the inner end of the metal sleeve of the reference cell, so leaving a space between the latter and central block. The outer electrode is a single central rod supported by the 3 PTFE barriers, which is shaped as a two-spined fork in the reference cell. alpha- radiation sources are mounted in the mesh of the measuring cell and in the metal outer end-wall of the reference cell. Between the prongs of the central rod, and shielding it from the alpha source, is a solid bolt or similar which can be screwed in or out from the side of the reference cell. By adjusting the screening effect of this bolt, the current across the reference cell can be made to just reach saturation for a desired low voltage across the electrodes (eg 30V). The device can be connected in a conventional way into a fire/smoke detections system.
