    Abstract: 224,267. Eveleigh, E. F., Robinson, G. C., and Ramsden, G. July 9, 1923. Valves; valve gear.- Arc-shaped slide valves 20, fitted in longitudinal grooves formed in the piston so as to reciprocate therewith, control transfer ports 13 and exhaust ports 14. The slides enter recesses 10 in the cylinder head and may be formed integral with packing-rings 21, 22, Fig. 5, arranged to fit in grooves 24, 25, Fig. 3, in the piston, a lighter ring being mounted behind the ring 21 in a groove sunk in the groove 24. Inlet to the crank case is controlled by a disc 31 mounted on the flywheel and pressed by springs against the crank case, through a port in which, and through ports 32, 38 in the disc and Hywheel, the charge enters. Spring-pressed packing-rings 35 are fitted on the flywheel. In a modification, slide valves on the piston control exhaust only, slides fixed to the cylinder head and working in grooves in the piston controlling transfer ports formed in the cylinder and piston. According to the Provisional Specification, the slide valves may be on the outside of the cylinder; or instead of using slide valves, an exhaust poppet valve in the cylinder head may be opened by the engagement of the piston with an extension of the valve, and a transfer valve opened by contact with the crank case, or a rotary transfer valve on the piston may be opened by contact with a cam or other means on the crank case and, by means of an extension, may rotate an exhaust valve in the cylinder head; or the rotary valves may be outside, or independent of, the cylinder.

    Abstract: 532,948. Electric conductors. ROBINSON, W. C., and MOORE, R. W. E. Aug. 2, 1939, No. 22393. [Class 36 ] An insulated electric conductor comprises a single or stranded conductive element 1, with a sheath 2 of rubber &c. about which is applied a helical serving 3 of filaments of cellulosic materials, rayon, wool &c. with the turns in contact and laid at an angle from 35 to 70 degrees to the axis of the conductor ; the serving is applied before vulcanization &c. of the sheath 2 and indents the latter so that the finished conductor is smaller in diameter than would be the case if the wrapping were replaced by a braid covering. Over the serving is applied a binder comprising one or more strands 4 of similar material wound with spaced turns and oppositely to the helix of the serving ; the binder is laid preferably at an angle of about 60 degrees to the axis of the conductor. The assembly is impregnated with a flame-retarding composition preferably comprising a pitch of animal, vegetable or marine origin, such as stearin pitch, and a natural or artificial mineral pitch, such as asphalt, together with a little wax such as montan wax and paraffin, which also forms an enclosure 5 for the serving and binder. A coating 6 of paint, varnish &c. may then be applied and receive identifying marks 7, followed by a coating 8 of paraffin or other wax, or a waxy composition. Specification 532,947 is referred to.

    Abstract: 532,947. Electric conductors. ROBINSON, W. C., and MOORE, R. W. E. Aug. 2, 1939, No. 22392. [Class 36] An electric conductor comprises a single or multiple flexible wire 1 with a covering 2 of dielectric such as rubber composition around which is wound a wrapping 3 of thread in a simple helical lay with adjacent turns in contact ; the wrapping is locked by one or more threads 4 wound oppositely to the winding of the wrapping 3 and at a substantial angle, preferably about 60 degrees to the axis of the conductor. The threads 3, 4, may be of cotton, linen, hemp, paper &c. and each turn of the locking thread 4 may comprise two or more strands. The wrapping 3 may be double. The wrappings may be treated with an inflammable asphalt composition to which is applied a flame-retarding composition such as pitch. Armouring or a non-metallic sheath may also be applied.

    Abstract: A method and portable apparatus to evaluate the planar flatness of a paper sheet comprises a pair of closely spaced horizontal edges secured in relative parallelism. The horizontal edges are separated by about three feet. The horizontal edges define a horizontal reference plane over which a sheet section of paper web is mildly tensioned with the web machine direction of the paper sheet oriented transversely of the edges. Substantially between the horizontal edges but slightly below the horizontal reference by about ⅛ to ½ inch is a comparison line in the form of a wire, for example. A fixture supporting the comparison line provides a plurality of wire-end attachment points. Supporting the horizontal edges are a pair of scissor frames that are held open to a predetermined angle by a compression gusset. Opposite ends of a horizontal edge are secured to respective upper ends of each scissor frame. Against the compression stress on the compression gusset, the scissor frame is drawn by a tensioned guy wire.
