Abstract:
The invention provides an apoptosis-modulating cell-free composition comprising conditioned extracellular medium of a stem cell and uses thereof, particularly therapeutic uses. Also provided is a method of obtaining such a composition and an in vitro method of modulating apoptosis.
Abstract:
A method of monitoring treatment of a human or non-human animal, which comprises implanting into the body of the human or non-human animal at or close to the desired locus of treatment a sensor which is adapted (a) to receive and to rectify an electromagnetic (e.g. radio) signal directed from outside the body towards it, and (b) to transmit data relating to treatment parameters by wireless telemetry to a receiver external to the body of the human or non-human animal; and processing the data transmitted by said sensor to provide information on the treatment.
Abstract:
The use of an implantable pump in the treatment of a condition characterised by inadequate fluid flow, in vivo, in or through a vessel, channel or conduit, is disclosed. This comprises inserting said implantable pump into said vessel, channel or conduit and causing it to operate when required. Control is preferably by telemetric means. Conditions susceptible to treatment in this way include urinary incontinence, pulmonary hypertension and inadequate pulmonary ventilation.
Abstract:
The conditioned medium from ECACC 04092401 Omnicytes, which are CD34+, wherein that medium comprises apoptosis modulating agents. Preferably the medium is for therapeutic use in the treatment of a hyperproliferative disorder such as skin disorders or cancer and particularly non-small cell lung carcinoma. The conditioned medium may have activity to promote the apoptosis of rapidly dividing cells or to promote the survival of slowly dividing cells and its activity is blocked by TNF-alpha blocking antibodies. Also disclosed is conditioned medium from other stem cells, particularly CD34+ stem cells having pluripotency and the ability to adhere plastic, for therapeutic use in the treatment of cancers and hyperproliferative disorders and in vitro use for apoptosis activation or inhibition.
Abstract:
A method of treatment using implantable devices is disclosed. he method comprises (a) implanting into the body of the human or non-human animal (i) a rectenna capable of receiving electromagnetic radiation in the microwave frequency range and of generating and/or storing electrical energy therefrom, and (ii) an electrically operated therapeutic device arranged to electrical energy from said rectenna; and (b) directing electromagnetic radiation in the microwave frequency range from a source external to the body being treated towards the position of the implanted rectenna so as to genera electrical energy to actuate said therapeutic device.
