Abstract: 516,920. Forging and squirting cases for shells. STEWART & CO.-, Ltd., D., CROSBIE, J. B. TALBOT-, and MACQUISTEN, A. P. S. July 4, 1938. No. 19697. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] In the production of hollow ammunition shells from a steel billet by a forging and extrusion process, such for example as that described in Specification 469,550, the formation of a fin between the plunger and the wall of the billet receiving chamber is avoided by cooling the billet over an outer annular area on the face of the billet which is subjected to the action of the moving tools. The. billet 6 may be cooled locally immediately prior to the forging and extrusion operation by immersion in a water vessel 1 having an inlet 2, outlet 3, guide plate 5 and an iron pad 4 on which the billet is rested..

[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Billet - piercing ; squirting.-In the manufacture of ammunition shells with a closed end, the billet 6, Fig. 1, is arranged in the die with the direction of the grain (indicated by the dotted line 9) not collinear with the direction of movement of the punch 7. Thereupon movement of the punch forges the billet to the form shown in Fig. 3 with the direction of the grain indicated at 9 . An extrusion process lengthens the wall of the case while maintaining the grain parallel thereto, the closed bottom having a grain transverse to the wall direction. The operation is otherwise substantially the same as described in Specification 469,550.

Abstract: 469,550. Forging and squirting cases for shells. STEWART & CO., Ltd., D., and CROSBIE, J. B. TALBOT-. Dec. 27, 1935, Nos. 35790, 35791, and 35792. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Billet - piercing ; ,forging - dies.-A hollow case or vessel, such as an ammunition shell case, is formed in a continuous operation consisting in first forming a case having an imperforate end by a forging process, and then completing the operation by an extrusion process. A billet b is supported, resting on an annular die 10, in a container 11, the lower end of the die being closed by a member 13. A plunger 26 carrying a punch 25 descends to force the lower part of the billet into the die 10 and to form a central recess therein by means of the punch 25. The member 13 is then removed and the billet extruded through the die 10, Fig. 5, upon further downward movement of the plunger 26, to produce the case b . The member 13, Fig. 1, may be removed by sliding its supporting bolster 14 laterally to bring a slot 18 therein beneath the member 13. Alternatively, the lower end of the member 13, Fig. 3, rests on a thin plate 20 which is sheared by the edge 13 of the member 13 when a predetermined pressure is exceeded. In a further modification, the plug 13 is supported by a plunger of a fluid-pressure-operated ram, which yields at a predetermined pressure. Alternatively, a mechanically operated plunger or a lever system may be operated to release the plug 13 when the fluid-pressure within a cylinder supporting the plug or that operating the punch 26 is observed to exceed a predetermined value. In a mechanical press, the plug may be released when the press head reaches a given point in its operative stroke, or the release may be initiated by the engagement of electric contacts or by collapse of a spring.

[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Forging ; squirting ; dies.-In the manufacture of shell and like cases or vessels as described in Specification 469,550, a metal base plate member 8 is embedded in the pierced billet 6 by laying it on the abutment 7 previous to the reciprocation of the punch. For positioning purposes the abutment may be keyed to receive a projecting 9 on the plate member 8. The direction of the grain of this member is transverse to that of the shell case. This member may be domed or otherwise formed so as more firmly to adhere after flattening by the pressure applied. It may also be shrunk into position.

Roller mills. - I n hydraulic pressure-regulating gear for sugarcane mills &c., the hydraulic cylinder B is secured within t h e aperture in the housing- cap A by any of the devices hitherto applied for securing the covers of the hydraulic cylinders, and the ram G bears upon the roll bearing-brass, either directly or through a distancepiece. The ram may have a brass shoe or liner E, the usual packing F being between it and the cylinder. Hydraulic c o nnexion is made to an aperture H i n t h e cylinder head, and this aperture serves, when the connexion is removed, for the insertion of an eye-bolt J for removing the cylinder and ram or liner. A removable cover K is provided for the cavity in the cap. The cylinder is shown secured in the aperture by a bayonet-joint C, D, but the divided - ring device described in Specification 33/12 may be used.

Spark-arresters.-The fannel A of a steam motor wagon is provided with a spark-arrester in the form of a hemispherical cap consisting of segments d of wire-gauze, which may be made to telescope into one another and leave the funnel open. Two brackets B carry two cress-shafts C, on each of which is keyed one hoop D, other hoops D being loose on the shafts. As a lever is lowered, connecting-links F and lever arms E cause the shafts to turn, thereby causing the segments to telescope, leaving the funnel open.

Abstract: 382,890. Rotary drying drums. DUNCAN STEW ART & CO., Ltd., London Road Iron Works, Glasgow, ANIMAL FOOD PRODUCTS, Ltd., Felstead, Essex, and CROSBIE, J. B. TALBOT-, Raheen, Chesters Road, Bearsden, Dumbartonshire. May 6, 1932, No. 13086. [Class 34 (ii).] A revolving drum through which passes material subjected to the drying action of hot air or gas introduced through the circumferential wall of the drum is constituted as a perorated shell which is machined externally so as to be truly cylindrical and smooth. The drum may be formed in sections aligned and interconnected by flanged rings. The hot gas is introduced into the drum through elongated supply ports each of which is narrow circumferentially of the drum but may extend nearly the whole axial length of one division of the drum. The ports are framed with wide sealing flanges conforming closely to the curvature of the drum and approximated closely to the drum to minimize gas leakage. These flanges are constructed as or backed by ducts for cooling water, and may be faced with wired asbestos composition or like fibrous material. As shown in the drawings, the perforations in the drum 1 are countersunk on the inner surface, and the flanges 4 of the gas supply ports 3 are faced with fibrous material 5 and cooled by water entering by the port 6 and leaving by the port 7.

Extracing sugar; purifying saccharine liquids. -In the manufacture of sugar where the sugar is extracted by diffusion and the juice is purified bv treatment with lime and carbon dioxide and filtered, the sweet water separated from the pulp and the water pressed from the pulp in pulp presses is neutralized by means of the filter press cake from which it removes residues of sugar. The neutralized water is refiltered and returned as diffusion water to the diffusion process.
