Abstract: An observation apparatus of the present comprises (i) a light source for generating light; (ii) a separating optical system which splits the light from the light source into two different polarized light beams; (iii) a condenser optical system which converges the two polarized light beams from the separating optical system so as to respectively form light spots on two different positions on a sample object; (iv) a polarization selecting means which has a predetermined analyzer angle and selects a specific polarized light component from composite light made of the two polarized light beams by way of the sample object; (v) light detecting means which detects the polarized light component selected by the polarization selecting means; and (vi) phase difference adjustment means which adjusts a phase difference between the two polarized light beams by way of the sample object and guides composite light composed of the two polarized light beams as circularly polarized light to the polarization selecting means, when the sample object does not modulate both phase and amplitude of the light incident thereon. Accordingly, this observation apparatus can detect a phase difference generated between the two light components respectively emitted from both side of a level difference on the sample object.

Abstract: A confocal laser scanning differential interference microscope includes an illumination optical system for radiating a laser light spot onto an object, a focusing optical system for focusing light reflected by the object onto a detection surface, a detection optical system for detecting the reflected light focused on the detection surface, a scanning device for scanning the laser light spot relative to the object, and an optical element arranged between the focusing optical system and the detection optical system, and having a waveguide device for propagating the reflected light focused by the focusing optical system. The waveguide device has waveguides in at least two directions perpendicular to the optical axis of incident light. The waveguides constitute a double-mode transmission waveguide, which selects either of a combination of a 0th-order mode and a 1st-order mode and the 0th-order mode alone in each of the two directions of the reflected light from the object according to amplitude distributions of electric fields in the two directions of the incident light as waveguide modes in the two directions upon propagation of the incident light, and propagates light in the selected modes. The detection optical system receives light emerging from the waveguide, and detects whether the waveguide in each of the two directions is the combination of the 0th-order mode and the 1st-order mode, or the 0th-order mode alone, thereby detecting amplitude distributions of the electric fields, in the two directions, of the reflected light from the object.

Abstract: A spread spectrum communication system for performing spread spectrum communication by superimposing a pseudo noise signal on a transmitted signal. The system comprises traffic detecting means for detecting the traffic of the transmitted signal, and means for changing the clock frequency of the pseudo noise signal in accordance with the output from the traffic detecting means. The system may alternatively comprise transmission quality determining means for determining the transmission quality of the received signal, and means for changing the clock frequency of the pseudo noise signal in accordance with the transmission quality determined by the transmission quality determining means. In operation, the system offers improved S/N ratios where traffic is high or transmission quality is low, saves power where traffic is low or transmission quality is high, and ensures large margins of power control precision for mobile stations near the upper limit of the system's line capacity.

Abstract: A content distribution system which assures reliability of content is provided. Permitted-user information corresponding to a user who is permitted to use content to be distributed is associated with the content. In the case where user specific information which specifies a user and the permitted-user information do not have a predetermined relation, a user terminal transmits the user specific information and the permitted-user information to a server. The server generates user-related information in which the received user specific information is set as a distribution destination and the permitted-user information is set as a distributor, generates new permitted-user information so as to have the predetermined relation with the user specific information, and provides the new permitted-user information to the user terminal. The user terminal which obtains the new permitted-user information changes the permitted-user information to the new permitted-user information.
