Abstract: Integration and packaging of monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMIC) components is facilitated by using a motherboard comprising high resistivity silicon, which having a thermal conductivity three times that of gallium arsenide. Ultra high purity, uncompensated silicon preferably is used. Anisotropic etching of recesses in the motherboard facilitates precise placement of the MMICs in the recesses, enabling use of automated die and wire bonding techniques to reduce required assembly time substantially. Using a silicon motherboard also ultimately enables incorporation of required control circuitry. The silicon motherboard also transmits RF energy well, a useful characteristic particularly in C-band and X-band applications in which microstrip is used, though other transmission media function well at even higher frequencies.

Abstract: 25,146. Laird, G., and Todd, J. P. Nov. 18. Motors, controlling.-Relates to the operation of motor controllers having a braking position and also separate reversing and controlling drums, the controller being operated by a single lever. The reversing-drum is adapted to be connected to the operating-lever by pins or plungers, so that, when in the 'off' position, it can be moved in either direction, the operating-lever being moved in one direction for 'control' whether the motor is running in the forward or backward direction. Figs. 1 and 2 shows one arrangement, in which the operating- lever 5 is mounted on the controlling- drum shaft 4, and is provided with two plungers 7, 8, either one of which can be depressed, when the switch is in the 'off' position, and caused to engage with a groove 3 in the head 2 of the reversing-drum. The plungers have enlarged heads 9 which are admitted through holes in the top of the controller casing, and the shanks of the plungers can slide in a groove 13 or 14 in the casing when the handle is moved. The plungers are carried by a pivoted lever 15 operated by a push 21. By manipulating the push 21 the handle 19 is moved in the Fame direction for 'control,' although the reversing-drum may be set for forward or backward running. In a modified form, Fig. 4, the reversing-drum 22 is loose on the shaft 4, and is operated from the grooved head or plate 27 by geared quadrants. In another modification, the lever is fitted with two handles, in each of which is a push similar to 21. Each push controls one of the plungers. In the form shown in Fig. 9, one plunger only is used, but is fitted in a sliding carrier 35, which may be moved into the position shown in dotted lines when it is desired to turn the reversing-drum in the opposite direction. In another modification, the carrier is connected to the handle which slides in a groove in the lever. In this arrangement, the plunger is operated by a push in the handle. In all the arrangements, a lost motion is provided for the reversing-drum, so that, after it has been moved, the operating-handle can continue its movement in the same direction without interfering with the reversing-drum.

Abstract: An electric power generating set which automatically varies its speed to match load variations at any time includes an engine driven generator G which provides a positive, Ga and a negative, Gb AC output voltage each of which is rectified by a respective rectifier Re3a,Re3b. Each rectifier Re3a,Re3b has one terminal connected to a common neutral line N. The DC output voltage of each rectifier Re3a,Re3b is boosted in a respective booster circuit which also has one terminal connected to the neutral line N. The combined output of the two booster circuits, Va + Vb is fed to an Inverter IN which converts it to the AC power output of the generating set. A DC load current between the booster circuits and the inverter IN is monitored and used to provide a speed demand feedback signal Srs to the speed control of the engine EN. The inverter IN is controlled so that the voltage and frequency of the AC power output of the generating set are reduced in response to a fall in the intermediate DC voltage Va + Vb that is fed to the inverter IN and which is monitored by a voltage sensor Vsab.
