    Abstract: IMPROVED PHOTOGRAPHIC CASSETTE AND METHOD OF DISPENSING An improved photographic cassette in which the plate and screen adjacent the front cover on the tube side of the cassette is unsecured to the front cover: that is, free floating, thereby achieving more uniform sheet-to-plate contact throughout the entire area of the sheet. The cassette also has a pressure plate and means forming a part of the pressure relieving means for engaging and holding the floating plate against the front cover upon actuation of the cassette p¢ressure relieving means. The floating plate engaging and holding means facilitates separation of the pressure and floating plates and unblocking of the cassette entry slot by the floating plate to allow a sheet to freely enter the slot.

    Abstract: In a film cassette (1), a spool core (23) is supported for rotation in an unwinding direction to thrust a leader section (37) of a filmstrip (F) coiled about the spool core through a film passageway (25) to the exterior of the cassette. A pair of flanges (41, 43) are arranged in spaced relation along the spool core (23) to overlie opposite longitudinal edges (53, 55) of the filmstrip (F) to radially confine the filmstrip. The flanges (41, 43) are adapted to permit the longitudinal film edges (51, 53) to force the flanges farther apart to allow the filmstrip (F) to escape the confinement of the flanges to permit the leader section (37) to be thrust outside the cassette (1). According to the invention, the leader section (37) is relieved (53', 55') to permit its forward edge (63) to be thrust clear of a light-trapping means (31) in the film passageway (25) before the longitudinal film edges (53, 55) begin to force the flanges apart, whereby when the spool core (23) is rotated in the unwinding direction any resistance the light-trapping means and the flanges present to film movement is more easily overcome.

    Abstract: In a film cassette, a spool core (23) is supported for rotation in an unwinding direction (U) to thrust a leader section (35) of a film roll (33) coiled about the spool core to the exterior of the cassette and in a winding direction (W) to return the leader to the interior of the cassette. A pair of flanges (41, 43) are arranged in spaced relation along the spool core (23) to radially confine the leader (35). The flanges (41, 43) are adapted to be flexed apart to permit the leader (35) to readily escape the confinement of the flanges when the spool core (23) is rotated in the unwinding direction (U). According to the invention, the leader (35) has respective edge portions (53', 55') for flexing the flanges (41, 43) apart in succession when the spool core (23) is rotated in the unwinding direction (U), whereby the leader can more easily overcome any resistance the flanges may present to movement of the leader outwardly of the flanges.

    Abstract: FILM CASSETTE A film cassette is disclosed wherein a film roll whose outermost convolution comprises a film leader is coiled about a spool rotatable within the cassette shell, a pair of flexible flanges are coaxially arranged on the spool to radially confine the film leader within respective skirted peripheries of the flanges to prevent the leader from substantially contacting an interior wall of the cassette shell, and a film stripper projecting from the interior wall is received between a leading end of the film leader and then next-inward convolution of the film roll to free successive sections of the leader from the flanges by inducing the leader to flex the flanges away from one another at their skirted peripheries responsive to rotation of the spool in a film unwinding direction. A film flattening member projects from the interior wall of the cassette shell in the vicinity of the film stripper and a light-trapping passageway to the exterior of the shell to support successive sections of the film leader substantially flat as those sections are freed from the flanges, to facilitate initial and subsequent movement of the leader into the passageway.

    Abstract: A medical instrument includes a sound card or an internal capability for generating sounds from a digital music or sound file. The medical instrument is one which generates unwanted noise and is constantly in the presence of a patient or an operator, and may be in a home, a clinic, a laboratory, or other intimate setting. For instance, a patient may be typically connected for hours to a hemodialysis machine that has a noisy pump. A blood-plasma volunteer may be hooked to a noisy blood separation machine for a period of time. A laboratory technician may work in close proximity to a sample preparation machine that constantly gurgles and whirrs. In each instance, a sound card and a speaker can generate previously-recorded masking noises that make the presence and operation of the machine more tolerable.
