    Abstract: A motor pump (10) includes a pump head (22) for pressurizing a fluid and an electric motor for driving the pump head. Within the pump head, radial forces produced in two symmetrical pumping zones are balanced against each other to reduce stress and increase efficiency. High pressure fluid exits the pump and follow a flowpath through the motor air gap, through an end bearing carrying a distal end of a hollow pump rotor shaft, and returning to the pump head by way of the hollow rotor shaft (44) . The motor rotor shaft (44) is axially movable with respect to the pump head, which effectively floats the motor rotor in high pressure fluid. A motor stator barrier (56) can inhibits fluid flow into the motor stator (90) , and a rotor barrier (112) can inhibits fluid flow into the motor rotor. The rotor barrier can is efficiently attached to the rotor shaft in such a way as to stiffen the shaft and increase its bending resistance. The walls of the stator barrier can are thin and expand under fluid pressure to make contact with and find structural support from the stator laminations and motor endshield. Overheat conditions within the motor, as well as the pump head, are detected by positioning a heat sensing switch (130) within the motor adjacent the pump head (22) to shut down the motor (14) when an overheat condition is detected.

    Abstract: A liquid level sensor for conductive liquids having a virtual bias ring to prevent false "full" indications. The sensor is an inexpensive conductive probe that can be installed in any tank or container used to contain a conductive liquid. The build up of residue such as conductive fluid that fails to drain on the inside of the container wall and probe pieces can cause a short between the probe and ground. This situation will result in falsely showing that the level of the liquid being measured is at least at the minimum predetermined requirement even though the actual level may be far less than that amount. The bias ring is a virtual "ring" that is provided around the insulating base of the sensing probe between the probe tip and the top inside of the tank. The probe is then given a charge (positive for negative ground systems) which interrupts the current path between the sensing tip of the probe and ground via the conducting residue. Consequently, the sensor will read correctly despite the conductive residue that may be present.

    Abstract: A heat-retaining hot food service unit which consists of a shaped body of metal, preferably aluminum, that is enclosed in a synthetic resin or plastic jacket which also serves as a base, a food-containing dish and a removable cover. The resin is molded into place around the aluminium body and has a configuration such that the removable food-containing dish nests in the plastic jacket which thus functions as a base for the dish. The resinous material has a coefficient of expansion greater than the aluminum body. In another embodiment an elastic expansion joint connects the body and the jacket to provide for variation in expansion of the two while maintaining a sealed connection between them.

    Abstract: A food service system comprising a cart that is movable from a central food preparation location to a remote food service location. The cart is insulated and has a rack for a plurality of individual meal service trays. Each tray carries cold foods in suitable dishes and a heat-retaining food service unit for food which may be either hot when placed therein or may be heated by connecting each unit to a source of electrical energy at the service location. The cart has conduit means which are connectable to a source of chilled air at the service location in order to keep the cold foods cold for a period of time while the food in the units is being heated to a desired serving temperature. If desired, instead of heating the food in the units at the service location, the heat-retaining units may be heated prior to departure from the food preparation location and will maintain the food therein at elevated temperature for a period of time, even while the cart is connected to the chilled air source for keeping the cold foods at a refrigerated temperature.
