    Abstract: 8894. Stewart, A. April 15. Feed - water, heating. - Relates to a combined water heater and circulator applicable to the furnace fronts of steam boilers, as described in Specification 6727/03, [Class 123, Steam generators], and consists in the particular airangement of connexions affording circulation between the heater and the boiler. The heater A consists of a semi - circular tube or casting located at the mouth of the furnace flue upon the deadplate. When applied to a Lancashire boiler as shown, the chambers are connected by means of a pipe D to the boiler at C. One end of each chamber is connected to the boiler at F, and the other end of each chamber communicates by means of a pipe H with a pump or injector provided with a check valve I and a stop cock J. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 6727/03, [Class 123, Steam generators].

    Abstract: 10,467. Stewart, A. May 4. Regulating ; switches. - To prevent overload in electric circuits where the current is liable to vary, as in the case of electric motors driving drills or other tools, a protective resistance is automatically switched in by a solenoid or the like. One form of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. The motor M is in series with the solenoid A, which with an excessive current throws over a switch arm C from the upper to the lower of the terminals F, and puts a resistance R into circuit. The movement is opposed by an adjustable spring D, by which the maximum current can be varied. The brush of the switch arm may be of carbon or metal, and is pressed upon by a flat spring k. In slightly modified forms, one or more spring brushes are carried at the end of the solenoid core and move longitudinally, while the core is provided with an adjustable spring cushion. Single or double.pole electro-magnets may replace the solenoids.

    Abstract: 15,497. Stewart, A. July 12. Blast apparatus. -Fee d water is passed through pipes within the interior of the blast pipe of a boiler of the locomotive type. In Figs. 1 and 2, showing the arrangement f o r engines with inside cylinders, the blast pipe C is fitted with casings A, B and tube-plates D. The feedwater is carried to the casing A through the smokebox to the pipes E as shown, returning to the generator by the casing B. Fig. 3 shows the arrangement as adapted to the boilers of engines with outside cylinders. In the Provisional Specification, a further modification is described, in which the tubes are placed horizontally in a chamber near the upper end of the blast pipe and extend across the smoke-box, a dashplate being employed to distribute the steam among the pipes.
