Abstract: There is herein described a light engine (100) that emits a light. The light engine includes a light source (110), a light guide (130), a plurality of extraction optical elements (140), and a plurality of phosphors (150). The light guide (130) receives the light. The extraction optical elements (140) are on the surface of the light guide (130). The extraction optical elements (140) extract at least a portion of the light out of the light guide (130). The phosphors (150) are disposed on top of at least some of the extraction optical elements (140).

Abstract: White-light efficiency from a light emitting diode is enhanced by recycling outwardly inwardly-penetrating light by application of a multi-layer, thin film filter between the LED die and the phosphor layer. This procedure increases the package extraction efficiency.
