Abstract: A composition comprising a wormwood essential oil and vitamin E is provided to show the synergetic effect of the vitamin E on the antioxidation and cholesterol lowering functions of the wormwood essential oil, thereby being used as a raw material of raw materials of natural food and medicinal materials and health functional foods helpful for preventing and treating arteriosclerosis. A composition for lowering cholesterol comprises 0.1-0.4mg/ml of a wormwood essential oil belonging to Artemisia sp. and 0.01 ~ 0.2 mM of vitamin E as effective ingredients, where the wormwood essential oil is extracted by using a steam distillation method. The composition is characterized in that it has the antioxidative effect on oxidation of LDL in serum and increases the expression of an mRNA and a protein of an LDL receptor. A composition for preventing and treating arteriosclerosis comprises the composition as an effective ingredient.

Abstract: A composition for lowering cholesterol containing Plantago asiatica essential oil is provided to perform oxygen-resistant using steam distillation, to lower cholesterol and to prevent or cure arteriosclerosis. A composition for lowering cholesterol contains Plantago asiatica essential oil as an effective component. The Plantago asiatica essential oil is extracted by using a steam distillation method, and includes a linalool as a main volatile refined oil material, fenchyl alcohol, bicyclogermacrene, menthen-2,3-diol and eugenol. The Plantago asiatica essential oil increases an expression of the LDL receptor from liver cells of the human, educes an expression of an HMG-CoA reductase and lowers a cholesterol of the blood of the human and the liver and an intestines, and a neutral lipid.
