A composition comprising plantamajoside derived from a natural plant is provided to show increased efficacy than a conventional diabetes/diabetic complications inhibiting material without side effects and toxicity, thereby being widely used as a health functional food or a medicine for preventing and treating the diabetes/diabetic complications. A composition for preventing or treating diabetes and diabetic complications comprises plantamajoside derived from Plantago asiatica as an effective ingredient. A method for preparing the composition comprises the steps of: (a) powderizing an alcohol extract of the Plantago asiatica; (b) after dissolving the powder in water, extracting the solution in sequence using hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and butanol in accordance with a polarity; and (c) subjecting the organic solvent extract obtained from the step(b) to gel filtration chromatography. Further, the gel filtration chromatography is performed by using a silica gel 60 or Sepadex LH-20.

A composition comprising chebulic acid is provided to inhibit production of AGEs(advanced glycation end-products) and remove reactive oxygen produced thereby without side effects and toxicity, so that the composition is useful for treating or preventing diabetes and diabetic complication. A composition for treating or preventing diabetes and diabetic complication comprises chebulic acid isolated by pulverizing Terminalia chebula, extracting the pulverized Terminalia chebula with ethanol, centrifuging the extract to obtain the supernatant, fractionating the supernatant with hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate and butanol, and subjecting the active fraction to silica gel and sephadex LH-20 column electrophoresis. The health food contains 15 wt.%, preferably 10 wt.% of the composition comprising chebulic acid.

A composition for preventing or treating diabetes and diabetic complications comprises chebulic acid as an effective ingredient, wherein the chebulic acid is derived from Terminalia chebula. A method for preparing the composition comprises the steps of: (a) obtaining an alcohol extract of Terminalia chebula; (b) extracting the alcohol extract using at least one organic solvent in sequence in accordance with polarities; and (c) subjecting an organic solvent extract obtained from the step(b) to a gel filtration chromatography. Abstract:
A method for producing caffeic acid improving gamma-GCS activity from green perilla leaves is provided to secure an improvement to liver and antioxidant effect at a little cost. A method for producing caffeic acid improving gamma-GCS activity from green perilla leaves comprises: a first step of reflux-extracting dried green perilla leaves in distilled water; a second step of centrifuging the extract to obtain supernate from it; a third step of filtering the supernate and vacuum-concentrating and freeze-drying the filtrate in order to obtain powder; a fourth step of extracting the powder using a plurality of extraction solvents in sequential order; and a fifth step of separating and refining the fractions showing high gamma-GCS activity. In the first step, 100g of the dried green perilla leaves are extracted in 0.8-1.2L of distilled water at 100-110°C for 3-4 hours twice. In the second step, the centrifugation is performed at 4°C and 7500rpm for 25-30 minutes. The extraction solvents are a first, second, third and fourth extraction solvent.

An extraction and purification method for an effective component of a plant is provided to reduce the use amounts of extraction solvent and column resin by performing the extraction and purification processes once only, thereby reducing extraction time and enhancing economic efficiency of the extraction. The extraction and purification method for the effective component of the plant comprises the steps of: solubilizing plant powder in ethanol, heating the mixture solution with a reflux at boiling point for 2-4 hours, centrifuging the plant extract at 2000-3000 rpm for 7-15 minutes, and collecting the supernatant to prepare the crude extract; drying the crude extract through vacuum-drying or vacuum-drying and freeze-drying, and dissolving the dried crude extract in water; and subjecting the crude extract solution to ion exchange resin and eluting it with 0-100% ethanol gradients to obtain fractions, wherein the plant is Plantago asiatica Decaisne and the effective component of plant is plantamajoside.
