Abstract: PURPOSE: A method is provided which not only increases strength of a zirconia sintered material due to crack blunting but also prevents deterioration at a low temperature which is transferred from tetragonal zirconia to monoclinic zirconia by forming a silica/zircon layer on the surface of zirconia through a simple process. CONSTITUTION: The method for reforming zirconia comprises the steps of introducing zirconia and Si compounds into an atmosphere controlling furnace capable of controlling a partial pressure of atmospheric oxygen; converting the Si compounds into the SiOx state by vaporizing the Si compounds by flowing an H2-H2O gas (H2O >= 0.1%) into the atmosphere controlling furnace; and forming a silica/zircon layer on the surface of the zirconia by depositing the obtained SiOx on the surface of the zirconia, wherein the Si compounds are one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of Si3N4, Si, Sialon and SiO2, the zirconia is slantly positioned inside the atmosphere controlling furnace with the zirconia spaced apart from the Si compounds in a certain distance, and the atmosphere controlling furnace is heated to a temperature ranging from 1300 to 1500 deg.C and maintained at the temperature range for more than one hour.
